Please be patient - I'm brand new to SL and would like to ask some questions before attempting to buy that "First Land". Elsewhere in the forums I've seen land values discussed, and apparently there are different values attached to properties depending upon whether or not the land is rated PG or Mature?
Can anyone provide a brief but informative guide on what to look for prior to committing to a First Land purchase?

If you're new and a premium member, you have the option to buy land for the landless at 1 linden dollar per meter, as your first plot. So money is not really a concern. (L$512 for your first plot of 512m2). If you do that, it's just a matter of finding the land in a sim you find useful/attractive/etc. Do a search for land and you'll see the land for the landless parcels come up. Just teleport around and find one you think will suit your needs. If you don't want to utilize the land for the landless, or just don't like what plots you see, and/or want to own more than the 512m2 allowed land: There is probably better advice out there from people who've had better success with land purchases. I've not found buying land to be the most pleasant and/or financially settling experience in my time here. So I'm a little jaded and bitter Good luck to you! And welcome to your Second Life.

Sophie,
I'd be happy to give you advice on your first steps in buying land, but I can't be in-world right now to talk to you.
You definately need to buy a First Land lot as your first land. Even if it's not where you want to settle down, you only get that chance once in your SL career, and it's a great deal you don't want to pass up!
As of yesterday, there were a nice number of First Land lots in the Mature Sim Terminous. I would look there first if I were you - especially as the resale on 512m2 lots will be higher for Mature thqan PG, if you don't decide to stay.
If you aren't in a big rush, I will be holding a Land Ownership 101 class this weekend and will be able to answer you more fully then.

I appreciate the suggestion... it helps to have some notion of where to begin looking! If I have any success I'll let you know.

Be careful! If someone comes up to you and affers to buy your land right away offering TWICE wOoOOooOooo what you paid for it, or trade you for another bit of land elsewhere, they're probably trying to cheat you.

If you decide you do want to sell your first land, the nicest thing to do is to talk to your neighbors to see if they'd like it. And as Jellin says, don't sell it without first researching its true market value, even if you're desperate for the cash to buy that lovely little 1024 around the corner! Fly around your area, and also use the Land Sales tab to find out the average price for similar lots in your Sim.
If I were starting out again today, I would definately buy First Land in Terminous, and then see if I could purchase neighboring land, either from other First Landers, or at auction (when it comes on the block in a day or so). It's a beautiful Sim!

I purchased my first land in Terminous tonight. I'm just going to take things slow and easy as I get used to SL.... I have a lot to learn. I may never move! It's just too early to know.
