Nvidia had a press conference in San Francisco today to announce, among other things, the 5950 and 5700 chipsets and associated drivers, with products to follow soon.

More info here:

theinquirer.net says the 5700 will be in stores by the end of the month.

I'm fed up with the problems I've been having with my ATI card and drivers, so I was all set to go out and buy an Nvidia board today, but now I think I'll struggle along with the 3.1 driver for a week or two more (how come everybody's avatar looks like a cyan blob? :) ) in hopes that the current crop of high-end Nvidia cards will go down in price.

Matter of fact, I do expect prices to drop. I have my eye on the GeForce FX5900, which has been hovering a bit over $200 for a while. I believe once the 5950 comes out, it should take it closer to $200, maybe even below.

I was also considering a 5600, which is a good deal cheaper (about $130 for the Ultra, if I recall), but this has to last a couple years, and the 5900 outperforms the 5600 significantly.

It will not matter very much for SL, which is CPU-bound anyway, but in other games it makes a huge difference.

p.s. I'm dark blue but that's on purpose

SL newsletter discount

I just saw in the Second Opinion newsletter that we get a "special" discount of $25 if we buy 5200, 5600, or 5600 Ultra cards from eVGA.com. Check the newsletter for the promo codes, you'll need to enter them to get the discount.

Before you buy from those links, check pricewatch.com and see if you can get your card cheaper. Note that if you buy a 5600 Ultra you will want to verify with the vendor that it is one of the newer 400MHz 5600Us and not the slower first-gen (which runs at 325MHz or something like that.)

Also, DO NOT buy the FX5200. It is the least bang for your buck. Spend another $30-$50 on the 5600, it is a lot quicker. The 5200 is an "economy" GPU designed more for cheapness than anything else.

The 5200 deserves an MX by its name.
