why is the sl program called "newview.exe"?

i kinda think it was originally called "view.exe" and when they were developing it they made a new version and called it "newview.exe" so they wouldn't confuse the two while testing. but then the name snuck into different parts of the program and before long it was too late and too much work to fix it so it was stuck as "newview.exe" forever.

any feteds have some insight into this historical and truly meaningful sl mystery? :D

That's more or less it, zuzi. I guess the name never changed due to inertia.
The first viewer (LL calls the client viewer because its more or less like a web browser) was made for Linux.
The server is exclusively for Linux (last I heard they ran Debian on all the simulators) and the first test client was made for Linux as well. I dont know if this was the OLDview, or if the oldview would be the Lindenworld viewer. You need to ask one of the REAL feted old timers who were in alpha (or maybe its written somewhere on the wikis or forums) :)
Oh, and so you dont get confused, Lindenworld was what they called alpha. Yes, it later was also used as the name of an experimental Linden-sponsored theme park.

Wow, I was simply blown away after only two or three posts. If I'd read it in it's entirity, the whole street would have been simply blown away.

Sorry to spoil the speculation party but here' s the real story...

Once upon a time there was a "viewer.exe" that lived in a directory called "viewer". Unfortunately viewer.exe had some design flaws and its creators decided to kill it and do a massive rewrite. To reduce chance for confusion during the period of time where both creations would exist side by side they created a directory called "newview" and named the better project "newview.exe".

I'm sad to report that newview.exe's days are numbered and the number is not very high. A very reliable source has told me that "newnewview.exe" is currently in the skunkworks and will soon be brought to life. A less reliable souce said something about putting it in a directory called "viewer" and calling it "SecondLife.exe".

Why can't we call it "SecondLife.exe" so we can recognise it on the task manager?

Or "AndrewIsDrEeeeeeevil.exe"
