Just checking, does anyone know if you can still hold land under this plan? I know you don't get any "free" land amounts, but can you still buy land and pay for it with the normal money plans?

paying for SL

The 9.95 plan is just for the download and the access to SL. The land fees are a totally different monthly charge. In order to own land you need a premium membership which has a monthly service charge and offers a more substantial weekly "grant" of 500 lindens and the "right" to 512m of land this is a privilage though not a deed to property you still have to buy the land in lindens. For an additional charge you can own more land. So for 5 dollars/month in land fees you are granted the "right" to own an additional 512m of land and can increase that incremently as your needs expand. It is easiest to think of these as seperate entities.

One time 9.95 plan=SL download and access fee
Monthly premium membership of 9.95/mo=access+512m+ stipend increase
Land charges (ie 5.00/mo for 512m)=additional land in 512m increments

According to everything I read you do not need to pay monthly to tier up your land ownership. So you can be a one-time subscriber, pay $5/mo, and have access to 512m2 of land. Of course you do not get the big ($500) stipend, the 'free' 512m2 of land, and whatever future benefits the premium accounts get.

From: someone
In order to own land you need a premium membership
This is the part he was asking about, and I think you are wrong. I think they are two entirely seperate policies and a one time $9.95 account can choose to pay monthly only land ownership costs.

I draw my conclusions from this 1.2 faq:
From: someone
This basic access includes a L$500 grant and an on-going cash infusion of L$50 any week when you're in-world, but no automatic land allotment.
Which says no automatic land allotment, it doesn't say you can't own land.

However the same page says:
From: someone
Current Residents will receive a no-cost land allotment, and those who opt for the $9.95 monthly membership will have an additional dollop of land on top of that.
Which we also know to be false. You must get the $10/mo to get any extra land for existing members.

So ... who knows?

Well that really wouldn't make alot of sence...everyone who has a premium membership would save 10 bucks a month by cancelling it and dropping down to the access fee and land fee?
Jeff and I talked about it one day and from what he said you have to upgrade to a premium membership to qualify for land ownership...I may be wrong.

If you sign up for the one-time fee and were in SL before 1.2, you get 1024 sq. m. of land. I signed up my gf for the one-time access fee and it tells her she can have 1024 sq. m. of land, she was in SL before 1.2.

That is what is so frustrating about these changes, they are so riduculously ambiguous and fluid in some cases. The whole monthly charge versus land access charge thing is burdensome and confusing, and the multiple discussions I have seen about this topic prove that. I do not know the post, but a Linden did officially state that the 9.95 one time fee accounts can own land - they just pay the land access fee. So for 9.95 a month on top of that, you get 512 more meters of land and a larger stipend. If you chose the one time account, there is no difference right now except for the stipend and the land grant.

The Basic and Premium plans are subscription plans, and give Residents access to Second Life. People with Basic memberships get a lower L$ amount at sign-up, a lower grant for the weeks they log in, and no land allocation (i.e. land free of land use or maintenance fees).

People with Premium memberships get a higher L$ amount at sign-up, regular weekly L$ grants, and up to 512 m^2 free of land use fees.

Anyone with a Second Life membership, regardless of type, can buy land and pay land use fees to keep it.

The next question which probably begs to be asked is: can you downgrade your plan if you find you don't need to premium land grant or L$ weekly grant. The answer is, of course.

I know there's another thread where people were doing the math and seeing that you could own more land without a premium membership on a monthly basis and that is correct.

What we've tried to do is come up with a flexible set of plans so people can tailor their involvement in Second Life. There may be very successful residents who have enough L$ income through various activities that the premium membership doesn't make financial sense to them and with the land fees they may have they wind up paying less.

As far as we're concerned, that's great.

We know the 1.2 changes may make things scary in the initial transition. It's a big change. But one we believe will help Second Life grow and help everyone to have a better Second Life experience.
