I joined SL in the early spring this year, and loved what I saw. It was the one game that ripped me away from Halo:Mac, and I could spend hours flying around, talking to people, building things, scripting them, and basically doing anything I wanted. Now, the framerate almost everywhere seems to be hovering around 2 fps, nobody who I talk to wants a canversation, and playing is more tedious than fun. What happened to the SL I once knew and loved?

Zindorf...how DARE you bring up a topic that makes sense. That relates directly to the game..... and impacts directly on all of us!!! Can't you see that rather that concern ourselves with moving the experience on, in terms of graphic capability....frame rates......Havoc engines, etc etc...... we HAVE to debate, endlessly, the concept of player run governments!!!!!!! Tut tut young man.........take yer damned common sense elsewhere!!!

I think some of the 8 million SL received in funding is earmarked for improving things like lag. Didn't Phillip mention that? Anyone?

How could I live without local lighting? T'would be a tragic day indeed, that day when I must resort to lowering quality simply to get the smooth experience I used to take almost for granted.
(My christman wishlist actually does include memory and and a better graphics card, which should help a bit.)

Yeah. I need to upgrade my box (or maybe get a better one for christmas, since I have no family, and work a min-wage job that barely pays rent), but the framerate is pretty sad.
As for conversation, track me down when I'm online.

No, actually, local lighting runs like ass even on a 6800 Ultra. Especially if there's a lot of players around you.
Was there ever a time when it didn't? I joined during 1.4.

I joined in maybe April 'O4 or so. I'm running a NVDA GeForce FX 5200 (stock with my G5) I am thinking of upgrading to an ATI Radeon 9800 pro. But that's pretty much besides the point. Yes, earlier in '04, SL ran much better. My hardware, internet connection, and software havn't changed, so I assume that SL has. Local lighting really doesn't affect my performance much. It may be an issue specific to your hardware.

It may simply be that you're not used to encountering large groups of players which are common in SL nowadays. Local lighting does not scale well with visible player count at all.

I am used to crowds, and did always notice slowing in crowds and crowded sims. But now the framerate hovers noticably low, even when I'm the only person in a simulator. Anyway, I didn't make this topic to discuss technical ideas. I think that many people can agree that SL's performance has degraded over time, and I just wanted to raise this issue in the hopes of improvements being sought.

So true, and meh it's so beautiful... I wish local lighting was more dynamic. Cereal, is there any technical reason why it SL has to be fully restarted in order to toggle Local Lighting? I'm a big fan of it, but like you said, it gets unusable in situations like zooming from the Welcome Area to The Edge. :| Zindorf Yossarian: I enjoy making conversation. Perhaps we'll meet inworld soon, and reminisce about when you were here but I wasn't even rezzed yet. *giggles*

A light tax, eh? Maybe the ancient skeletal structure of whatever that thing was is what makes local lighting toggle require a restart? Anyway, I don't see why local lighting would hog bandwidth. That kind of thing should be processed locally, no?
