After some long hours of plotting waypoints and scripting, the public airship tours are back. There are currently two routes, but I plan to have six -- one goes through the old world and Nova Albion city, and the other goes northeast along the highway to Waterhead welcome area. Both are free (of course).

You can hop on the airship anywhere along the route or start a flight at Abbotts Aerodrome, one level below the runway.

w00t Cubey. I highly recommend doing this with some friends. You can take in the great sights of Second Life while chatting and not having to worry about catching up. :)

I'm looking for ideas for the other four routes and would love to hear some suggestions. Can anyone suggest a theme for a route. I'm thinking of something like "Volcanos of SL" or "Club Crawl" or something like that.

"Club Crawl" sounds like a great idea to me. It might have to be updated fairly frequently, though.

A tour focusing on the natural aspects like forests and such would be good.

"Crawl" would be appropriate. More like a Club Dragging Yourself By Your Eyelids.

^5 Cubey woot!!!

I was standing on my observation deck at my tower in Crescent, and I see one of them flying by... A right-click-Fly later and I am zooming to parts unknown! It was a lot of fun!!!

Do you have any idea how long the routes take? I have no idea how far into the route I hitched a ride on! :p

Peace and Happy Building,

Arti

I didn't time them. The route from Abbotts to Waterhead is quite long... maybe 45 minutes at a guess. The route from Abbotts through the old world and city is shorter... maybe 15 to 20 minutes.

Thanks! And also give credit where credit is due. The autopilot script that I'm using was written by talented coder, Apotheus Silverman.

Hey. This is the airplane right (commercial looking jetliner)? If so, I've done this before and it's great. Didn't know it had gone down, but glad it's back.

PS- To you or anyone else. What draw distance do you guys use (in general or on this flight), because I found it hard to see things at the higher altitudes. Was fine when the plane was flying a little lower. I have to comprimise between quality/performance most of the time, just to get decent FPS (anywhere in world, not just talking about the ride).

PPS- When does the Flight Attendant roll by with the drinks? :D

Awsome Cubey! I loved the other ones, so I'll have to check these out!

As for other tours, what about "Islands Of SL" going across some string of islands or something (to incorporate the volcano) or "Natural Wonders"? Or "Arctic Climates" for snow sims? I dunno, Club Crawl sounds cool.

Omen, I usualy run at a low draw distance to avoid lag, probably something around 100-200 would be enough to see stuff below from the air, thats a guess though I could be wrong.

Nope. This is the airship -- the blimp. A couple of months ago, some castles cropped up right in the flight path, so I had to stop the flights. I was too lazy to plot new tour routes until now.

I generally stick with 96 or 128. My net connection can't handle more. The airship does go higher than that, but because you don't have to control the airship, a greater draw distance won't hurt you.

I dunno. I've been waiting for my scotch for ages. She's fired! :D

Does either route go through Davenport at around cloud level?

Nope. I can't find any airports there.

ads for your aerodome should be in the classified forums or maybe the special events forum? :D

Sorry, just a pay back

I don't charge money for the airships rides, and they're not an event. I don't see how this would be an ad.

Same reason you said discussing the rate of $L an ad?

I don't know if it belongs in Notices, but Services... sure. If LL wants to move this thread, that's fine by me.

New route added to airship tours
04-12-2005 11:49
Today I added a new airship route between Abbotts and the northern continent. It travels at high speed and high altitude until it reaches Purple, where it flies low to pick up passengers, then it zips through the sim corridor and up to the tiki hut atoll (whatever that place is called). It then returns to Abbotts along a similar route.

You can hop on at any point or visit the terminal in the southwest corner of Abbotts.

Hey, Cubey! IM me inworld if you'd like to set up a route exploring the forested areas of SL. I'm writing a series of investigative articles on just those regions and in the process have amassed quite a list of folks who devote land to natural spaces. Maybe it could speed up your workflow if you're interested.
