On the page for downloading and joining SL it states you must be a resident of the US or Canada to join.
But, reading some of the posts in the forum, it seems clear that many people aren't from those two places.
Not that I want to exclude anyone, but why that rule, and if so, why is it broken?

I think it's because you get the best support if you own American/Canadian mainstream computer products, so they don't have to deal with a very foreign support question. Also, foreign keyboards don't work well with SL yet. Finally, I think the main 2 reasons are 1: You might lag so badly that the game is not enjoyable and 2: They only accept US or Canadian dollar bills.

If you think you fit into all that (as in, aren't any trouble to Linden Labs) you can probably still join :D

It is probably a legal issue. I would guess Second Life software is only registered for use in the US and Canada. It's available elsewhere, since it's on the internet, but not officially sanctioned.

However, the Lindens aren't gonna kick you out for being from outside of North America.

Exactly, they don't "officially" support foreigners but they don't boot you for being on, its been brought up in townhalls before.

If you have broadband, you SHOULD be fine, as far as connection speed goes, but if you don't have a "standard" US keyboard, you might run into some problems. SL's multi-lingual support isn't the greatest and the Lindens just haven't had time to focus on improving it yet. There's no legal issue, and they won't kick you off, but they can't guarantee the best results.
