I've heard the word "Outlands" come up many many times in different SL topics, but the term was coined long before even I got here during the beta phase. In modern reference I thought it usually referred to Jessie now. However I thought it originally meant the mature sims area located in the far south west. But to be honest, I don't really know the exact meaning of it, if someone feels like clarifying.
I've noticed that 4 of the 5 mature sims, the excluded one being Jessie, are colored red on the map though. So I've now come to the conclusion that those 4 are what the term refers to, is this correct? And what does that imply? I tried inviting a trial user to our City of Gold located in Stanford and they unfortunately kept hitting an invisible wall unable to enter the area and pointed out to me that it is marked red on the map. Are trial users forbidden from this area? Is that where the term is coined from? Which seems strange, since I remember being able to explore this area as a beta tester when I originally signed up, and those sims were red on the map for as long as I can remember.
Please enlighten me!
Thanks

Those 4 sims (Stanford, Hawthorne, Shipley, and umm.. forget the fourth one) are mature sims. Since the credit card requirement has been removed, there's no way to even nominaly verify the age of trial users. They're banned from all mature sims, not just the Outlands. If I'm not mistaken, The Outlands (they're in the Southeast, BTW, not the Southwest) were originally all damage zones.

Back in the old days, the outlands were the four east most sims. After the WWIIOL'ers incident, the outlands were moved to Jessie only. When you say outlands now, it refers to Jessie ONLY. Jessie and the four east most sims, along with a few others, are mature, which trial users cannot go to, until they sign up.

Oops your right, I meant the south east. So trial users can't go to any mature sim? That makes sense I guess, but the announcement for 1.05 said they could go "anywhere". Good to know though, thanks everyone who replied!

Don't feel bad , Rathe. I can't keep east and west straight either. Or left and right for that matter.

I guess that really depends on your point of view, doesn't it? The great thing is, that with significant demand, other damage areas - perhaps other islands that Jessie Residents can fight with - can be added to the region as new sims.
