Wow,
I was just making sure some updates worked on my web site with Opera and I thought I'd stop in the forums for a bit and WOW it sure renders the tables / forums so much faster than IE! I'm impressed. This is a suprisingly good browser over all.

What the heck kinda hardware are you running, that you even notice it rendering HTML I have a 486-33 hooked up to the internet, using my computer as proxy. I can use IE5, NS4 or Opera 3.62, under Windows 3.1. It takes hella long to boot, but I don't have any performance problems HTML-wise. Just don't get on a webpage with flash. Since it's windows 3.1 I can only get the flash 3 plugin for it, but it still runs some stuff... at the blazing speed of like 4FPS for a really simple movie

LOL I'm not on a 286 or anything I have a 3Ghz P4 with 1G of memory and a Radeon 9800 pro. I can definitely tell the difference in the browser speeds in the forums though. --Jack Lambert

Why is it that people actually still use MSIE anyway? It has never supported all the standards or image formats out there. Are they just lazy, using whatever happens to be sitting in front of them, uneducated about that relative state of browser technology, or dogmatically faithful to MS software?

For me, the simple answer has always been: it works with more web sites than the others. People code for it.
I wrote the original post a few hours ago but I am still in my Opera session and I'm really trying hard to remember why I normally use IE at the moment.

No, it's a compatibility-neccesity thing sometimes. It bites, but I have to resort to The Internet Exploiter often. From: Jack Lambert Wow,

--Jack Lambert Isn't it? Try the mouse gestures features....it's pretty neat. (newer version only I guess) Eggy: Maybe it's the version. I'm running on an Alienware supercomputer here and the version of Opera I'm using now (7.54?) seems pretty slow at times. Slow to start up, too. (IE probably cheats and pre-loads stuff on OS bootup) And often slow to render webpages. It may be related to something "going wrong" on my system here, but I have yet to look into exactly why it seems so sluggish. I think I noticed a difference between the Java and non-Java version too. But I'm afraid Opera probably is starting to become a victim of the "BLOATWARE" trend at this point. It was never slow like this on a weaker computer than I'm on now, with a much earlier version.

Gotta love Opera! My favorite feature is one of the simplest. 'Z' goes back, 'X' goes forward. As someone who avoids using the mouse as much as possible, these are a godsend. No more trying to ALT-arrow (not easy for a lefty)

isn't "backspace" back in IE and right arrow forward?

From: Pete Fats As someone who avoids using the mouse as much as possible Wha? Go to previous page hold right button, click left button hold right button, move mouse left Go to next page hold left button, click right button hold right button, move mouse right Reload page Hold right button, move up then down Duplicate page Hold right button, move down then up Close page hold right button, move down then right hold right button, move right left right Mouse gestures! Wee! "move down then right" or "move right left right" sounds hard and error prone but it actually works pretty good, and quick too. Faster than finding a key on the keyboard and definitely faster than clicking a stupid button. (Once you get some of them memorized, anyway, it's nice.) BTW Doesn't The Internet Exploiter let you go back and forth with alt-leftarrow alt-rightarrow or something? Edit: Oh nm, I see you mentioned that.
