What do residents think about the idea of an "Ali G" or "Tom Green" type in Second Life? I think those guys are really funny, but in SL, would they be considered griefers? Why, why not?

Tom green isnt funny. Ali g is(in small doses). If either of them came into second life, I would have a new profession.

The Ali G movie was actually a lot more humorous than I expected.
I agree with the small doses thing for his website, and thought that a whole movie would be grating, but the humor was rapid fire enough, and there were actually a few moments where I laughed really hard.

Neither of them hold a candle to "Just for Laughs: Gags". - but if they were being silly in SL would they be griefers?

Hmm, sorry Jack, to answer your question. . .
I think they would be griefers, and here's how I think it differs from the real life Tom Green and Ali G. . .
I imagine the people that get pranked in those shows get compensated in some way. . . either money, or possibly just the possibility of fame on tv. . . but I bet at least some money.
Either way, I imagine they have the right to stop a segment from being used if they so choose. At the very least, the producers would have to get a waiver signed to use their image in the show - so maybe, if a person were unwilling to sign that, we might still see the prank, but Tom Green would be pranking someone that was blurred out.
In today's 'reality show' atmosphere, I imagine it's doubtful that anyone would turn down the opportunity to be on television, so I doubt very little ends up getting completely removed from their shows.
However, it should be noted that each victim of the prank has every right (and I imagine this happens periodically) to sue the producers of the Ali G or Tom Green show.
I guess this would be the equivalent of filing an abuse report on a griefer.
Maybe if an Ali G or Tom Green wannabe was running around and pulling pranks, and then handing out L$5,000 to each of the victims, it would be less likely that they would be abuse reported.
Regardless. . . these type of pranksters rely on the anonymity of disguise - and while we can absolutely change our appearance in SL, there's not much way of getting around that name floating above our heads.

Booyakasha! Sacha Baron Cohen is a a very bright social satirist. His rapper character Ali G, cluelessly interviewing famous people of serious demeanor, is a wicked visual gag. His three characters: a burned-out, ignorant, cockney British-Jamaican b-boy; an anti-Semitic, misogynistic nymphomaniac who is a television reporter from Kazakhstan; and a homosexual Austrian fashonista -- all conduct interviews on unsuspecting Americans, who include prominent political figures and celebrities, that reveal deeply hidden prejudices and challenge social mores within American society. He is a legitimate comedian. I really dont see how he could be considered a griefer in SL. Tom Green is a douche bag! The likelihood of Tom Green being considered a griefer is much greater. A lot of the shit he does is juvenile and intended to upset and shock. These actions could easily warrant a griefer title. He is not a serious comedian but rather an obnoxious mentally ill fucktard. The two are so very different in style, cultural and intellect that they really should not be forced together like this. Sasha spends a number of months evolving into one of his characters. His style demands more much more dedication and commitment to his trade. He is actually a serious comedian whose humor is worthy of appreciation. Tom Green just SUCKS!

I doubt either would have the patience to run through SL. I just imagine them figuring out how to walk and just constantly bumping into people and asking where to find a strap on cock.

I have never been a big fan of practical jokes, but Ali G makes me laugh. He makes me uncomfortable, but that is not always a bad thing. Different strokes....makes life interesting.
