I think it'd be awesome if we could host the discussion in the ny ruins of 9/11 or a townsquare of baghdad with a toppled statue of Saddam Hussein.
Lots of cool things!

I think the idea of a the discussion is a good one, but I think backdrop/setting should be kept as non-confrontational as possible to help preserve the 'healthy discussion' aspect Hamlet is going for. Maybe a Denny's, or an IHOP.

The beauty of second life is its ability to immerse people in environments which inspire their imagination.
We get enough dry debate in forums. Lets use seconlife to evoke our emotions. While obviously there is no need for ad hominens or faulty logic, I think a passionate debate about the issues properly inspired is a good thing. _____________________

We get enough dry debate in forums. . (O.o) I hope that's sarcasm, cause I've seen and felt quite a bit of emotion here in the last week! _____________________

Unfortunately, passion and logic are often arch-enemies of each other. Inciting psuedo-patriotic fervor with images of 9/11 is not going to lead to a logical discussion. (We've already seen what that leads to.)

Uh-oh, if thee needs to be a "patritotic setting" in it, then that makes it twice a reason to NOT attend any event of this kind.... We all know that politics and religion are 'the' two matters that can and will degenerate in heated debates the most quickly (the third being legacy matters, but tha'ts for family discussios mostly). 9/11 setting or ruined Baghdad or whatever... bad, bad idea! Keep in mind we have all kind of people here. Let's say there's an Iraqi player who would like to take part to the discussion (the word is "international", right?), who didn't support Saddam in any way, but would still feel offended by seeing such images of his/her country no matter what. Pretty good way of inviting peopel to a calm an open discussion, eh.
So wouldn't something neutral be more welcome? We can be creative *without* having to resort to something already holding a high political value, and on which not everyone will agree with (lt me know if I'm mistaken, but I doubt anyone would feel offended by benches, chairs and tables in a neutral background, would they?) (Uhm, and I'm not American, but hosting a debate in the ruins of a tragedy like 9/11 is uhm... sick. There's too much mourning, deaths and grief attached to this place now, let things stay where they are and not try to turn them into yet another element of pseudo-patriotism - or am I late and is this already irremediably done? ) _____________________

I agree with Tanaquil. The settings you propose, Blaze, do not inspire inspiration.
They inspire sadness, fear, and anxiety. _____________________

Oo! Oo! I know! We can discuss Japanese culture in a bombed out Hiroshima!
Or how about discussing German politics in Dachau? That'd be cool! _____________________

heh heh ok folks.
Well, personally, I have more than enough opportunity to debate these subjects with my friends in the RW. Why would I bother doing it in SL if I can't take advantage of its unique aspects? _____________________

I agree, political threads are for the off topic forum.
However, I think discussing on how to better leverage the SL medium is a pretty interesting subject. _____________________
