http://www.nyls.edu/pages/2559.aspState of Play is where a bunch of people get together and talk about really abstract concepts about virtual worlds. LLabs is usually there in full force. That page up there has links to a couple interviews with Robin, Philip, and Cory Linden. Interesting insight as to how SL may/will develop BTW, Philip is a hell of an eloquent speaker. He should be in politics LF

Excellent. Thanks for the link LF. I'm listening to the talk with Cory at the moment. Is it just me or does Yochai Benkler (The guy from Yale) just not "get it"? hehe.

Ok, simmer down fanboyz. It's been up since October, and SLH already covered it all, complete with pictures of them all drunk on Margaritas on the floor.
Philip is eloquent? I wish I had a dollar for every time he says "kinda" and "sort of" -- I could buy telehub in Gogebic now!
BTW, the kind of haircut is what they call in Russia a "yozhik," i.e. "a hedge-hog".
I stopped listening (I may go back) after his corporate promotional tripe about groups and collaboration and international hands-across-the sea sort of happy stuff. He's another unwitting sole who doesn't think the clash of civilizations goes on right in his game.
Group functions, as anyone knows who has spent five minutes in them, are loaded and larded with bugs and problems. You can't access objects. You go through all sorts of hell trying to get everybody in the group to access everybody's objects. The officers in the group can sell out the land from everybody. The members in the group don't have land edit permissions. And on and on. It is simply not thought through from a consumer perspective for other purposes than the usual self-congratulatory tekkie wiki. And even those wikis complain about how groups work, because they don't work well.
I'm glad SL gave intellectual property rights to creators, it was the right thing to do for freedom and growth. But now they have to think about the tyrants they've created who can a) not give mod perms b) kill copies and c) rant about resale of their precious objects or prevent resale through click-offs. It's a created and subsidized oligarchic class -- erm....a kind of feted inner core, if you will.

Why do people who obviously dislike so many aspects of something, up to and including the founder and CEO, keep participating? I mean, it's pretty clear they have animosity from the top down. Do they think they are smarter than the designers? If so, why not create their own game? Why do they not move onto something that doesn't cause them so much angst? I guess it's "Savior Syndrome". "I will prove to everyone how fucked up this place is if it takes me forever!"

Because if they can't complain about something being wrong, they can't be elitist.

From: Tren Neva Because if they can't complain about something being wrong, they can't be elitist. Let's not forget "they can't be elitist while accusing everyone else but themselves of being in fact, elitist". Prokofy's posting is so sickeningly disrespectful that it just shows more and more of his/her character, or lack there of.

When someone's argument consists of vitriolic indictments and general moaning I pretty much switch them off. In my experience those types of people never have their ideas implemented nor do they tend to make any shift in culture. If nothing they say will effect me in a tangible way, there is no point in arguing.

From: Prokofy Neva c) rant about resale of their precious objects or prevent resale through click-offs. Actually, that thread had very little ranting. There was cordiality and understanding from both sides. Resale is an important issue and more relevant a topic in SL than in RL because products do not devalue with age in SL. Few (if any) said that it was flat out wrong. More people asked, however, if the reseller wouldn't mind notifying the creator of their intentions. Prok, where do you find the time to write these tomes?

I'm gonna have to see how Philip stacks up to Bel Muse in this department -- Bel is currently my title holder for best pronunciation of "kinda". Thanks for sharing the link, Lordfly, I'm gonna check these vids out!

LOL! This is one of the dangers of choosing "better than everybody else" for a personae. You actually have to be better than everybody else for it to work.

From: Nolan Nash Why do people who obviously dislike so many aspects of something, up to and including the founder and CEO, keep participating? Maybe it's the "I can't respect any group that includes me" syndrome. I don't understand why they are here either; I am here because I love SL.
