I was reading today on the Future Tense tech news site that OpenOffice, a free, open source office software package, turns four years old today. I've heard a bit about OpenOffice, but not much. Does anybody here use it? Is it worth using? Just curious.

Yep, been using it since it first started... wonderful app... best on the market right now... (well the pay for version StarOffice is, but OpenOffice is 99.999%) Makes MS Office look like it was written by schoolkids ... oh wait, it was...

Open Office is truly a great program and is on par with both of its competitors, its conversions in my experience work better than the other 2 as well.

These are very sad times to be an American but where is the rage among the citizenry? Where are the flag wavers who so laud the freedoms symbolized by a flag and written by quill pens in our constitution? Why are we not rallying in the streets against this sort of attrocity? Why because we are gluttonous lazy bastards who say it won't happen to me so who cares. --Ishtar Pasteur

For all that I need (.doc, .xls, and .ppt creation/editting), OpenOffice is wonderful. No muss, no fuss, and no US$ going to Microsoft.

I had tried StarOffice and liked it. Thanks for the link - going to download it now.

Thanks all for the positive input about OpenOffice. I think this will keep me from making a costly (and, apparently, unnecessary) upgrade to the current version of MS Office.

Unless you really need to use specific macros functions that can cause a few problems in OO, go with it. I've been using this only for more than 1 year now, it's a good software, never had any crap with it, and all the people to whom I've sent converted files (because they have MS and can't read the OO format that is) never complained. Besides, it's free, so you don't have anything to lose for trying it, do you
