I have no idea if people in the US (or Europe) for that matter will know who John Peel is, but he's been a legend in UK radio broadcasting for 40-odd years or so. Anyway, sadly I've just read on the BBC web site that he's died of a heart attack aged 65 whilst on a working holiday in Peru. He'll be missed from the air-waves

I liked his sexay gravelly voice. And the way he constantly condescended people sarcastically. *swoon* my hero

Shows how I'm getting old, I also listened to his Home Truths programme on Radio 4 a lot, so no more Home Truths or Peel Sessions unfortuantely.

AWWW DAMN. So sad. This man stood in the face of a lot of music snobs and championed his eclectic tastes in a variety of styles to millions in the UK, Europe, and beyond. And this was so sudden too. RIP JOHN PEEL.

Moopf, he did a lot of broadcasting for BBC world, so I guess he should be quite well known around the world. A very sad day for music broadcasting. Rest in peace, John Peel. P.S. Who ever knew he was a public schoolboy?

Who ever knew he was a public schoolboy? I never realised he actually started his DJ career in Dallas either! And I forgot about the broadcasting he did for BBC World.

Back when he worked for WRR Radio (and after that at KOMA and KMEN) he used his real name (deep breath...John Robert Parker Ravenscroft), though, so you're forgiven He only became John Peel when he moved back to work on Radio London... the same year they outlawed pirate radio stations >.<

american git here This is very sad.. Peel was amazing. He championed one of my favorite bands... The Wedding Present. Some of the greatest recordings ever came out of his sessions, from bands like Dinosaur Jr.

I am sad - but I know of Emma Peel (Steed's partner) - who I was totally crushed out on for a few years. SIGH!!
