So, who was the referrer?

I would click, but that is part of Google's AdWords program, which is charged *per click*, and since I know about SL, I'll save them a buck or two and just ask...

... who was the referrer?

I just followed through the process of signing up one of those paid ads, and they seem to be done on a cost-per-click basis. I'd be interested to know how (upto now) it has worked out on a RL$ spent vs L$ gained side of things.

At work, one of the things I do is manage the Google AdWords project.

They use an auction-like system of bidding to factor the cost-per-click. So, if you have a relatively unique search keyword, chances are its not going to cost you much. If, however, you are bidding on a popular keyword, such as 'computer' or 'software', you're probably going to pay alot.

We average about $1.75 per click. The ROI isn't too bad, but you also have to factor in the free advertisement. If only 1 out of 1000 people click on your ad, you got 999 impressions for free. And while those 999 (potentially) didn't click on your ad, they did see your name/brand.

I started doing it when I did a search for Second Life and There.com was the top hit on google adwords... I couldn't have any of that...

BTW, it's not a money-making opportunity, I can assure you of that =)

I inadvertently went well over $100 last month. I've since turned it way down now that it seems there.com doesn't seem to be coming up as an adwords hit on "second life" anymore.

Between the adwords thing and my referral link in my signature on several forums, I've gotten about ten referrals in the past month.

I think the forums seem to work better, I seem to notice a referral is more likely on days that I've posted to various forums, and at least they're free =)

Before anyone thinks I'm doing something evil, let me give you all the numbers...

Between (roughly) Feb 13 - Mar 7, I spent US$141 on google adwords

I recieved less than 12 referrals in that time.

You get L$2000 per referral (the website lies)

L$24,000 / L$250 = 96 GOM blocks

US$141 / 96 = US$1.47/block

Not too good of a deal considering you can buy L$ on GOM for US$1.13, and I'm being optimistic with my referral count (some of which most likely didn't even come from adwords).

[Edit:

Oh, I completely forgot a big detail, not all my referrals signed up. That makes it a lot worse for the ROI angle...

I had 6 or less people sign up during that time. So it's more like $2.94/block.

Well, I like SL and I like Google, so it's money well spent.

I did get thank you's from some interesting people though, so I think it's probably worth it... =)
