I Just wanted to make this post because It's Veterans day tomorrow here in the US.

Lets give one big happy cheer (EACH) to all those Men and Woman who have served in our military.

For those soldiers from the past who helped make this country what it is to those currently active who assure it stays that way. You are an under-appreciated jewel in the coffers of the USA and deserve to be proud of what you have done. I am writing this because we all know that our veterans aren't recieving the recognition they deserve and I feel that they should know that some of us actually appreciate all the sacrafices they have made.
I am very proud of you all, Heroes ou our country. THANK YOU! We Love you! (those who don't, SHOULD) God Bless! Happy Veterans Day!

Yes, I am a veteran. I was very fortunate during my service - I was able to visit many places around the globe during times of peace. I was also fortunate enough to survive (obviously) those times and places where conflicts were occuring while I was there.

On this American Veteran's Day, I remember those who went before me. Many are no longer here to celebrate and remember with me/us. Only those who have braved such life experiences (IMHO) can truly appreciate the current and ongoing sacrifices being made so selflessy by so many in such far away places - and just around the corner also. We cannot forget their sacrifices.

Throughout my career I was also fortunate enough to meet and befriend numerous servicemen and women from different countries - including a number whom I had once called enemy. I never once met one who, under different circumstances, might have been my neighbor, my best friend or my foxhole buddy had they been born American - or I another nationality - and I would have felt equally honored to have known them and served with them.

The funny thing is, we soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines - even the Coast Guard types - from around the world almost universally deliberately chose our careers. Yet we abhorred the potential horrors which we would willlingly subject ourselves to in the name of a higher cause. We, to a man/woman, were ready to suffer the ultimate sacrifice so that others would be free to pursue that lifestyle we had each once known as civilians - free from real and tangible concerns of security (in other cases, childlike in our awareness of security issues but secure knowing others stood the watch).

On this American holiday, I will also remember and honor those other servicemen and women who stand the watch around the globe, protecting those who cannot or will not protect themselves. There are threats, foreign and domestic, which only the military is actually equipped to deal with - however unfortunate that might be. Yet this is the reality of the world. Those who serve in the military remain my heroes, from the 18 year old paper-pushing clerk to the "pecker-checking" corpsman, from the rifle-carrying infantryman too cold to think 100% clearly walking a post in the snow to the four star general who has forgotten what it was llike to be a "Butterbar" fresh out of OCS and now in charge of a group of "men" who probably know more about his job then he does as he gives his first order.

And I honor the men and women who spend their lives at sea, far from home and family, who work the mid-watches and become night owls because enemies are likely to threaten and attack those who are not forever vigilant.

Today is a day of celebration and rememberance for me.

If it is not for you, I wonder why......... no, I really don't. "Our" service (in and for whatever country around the globe at whatever time it happened to be) has given you the right not to care. But you should.

we attended a wreath laying ceremony at a local monument that lists veterans of both world wars, korea and vietnam. it impressed me that several dozen teenagers were there on a day out of school.

And a big cheer and a happy Rememberance Day to those that served in my countries military. Drink a beer for me and have a game of 2 up.

And remember:

For those still here;

"We are the ragtime army
The A.N.Z.A.C.
We cannot shoot, we won't salute
What bloody use are we?"
(Sung by the battle weary ANZAC’s after leaving Gallipoli)

... and those that aren't;

They shall grow not old....as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.
"LEST WE FORGET"

Siggy.
