Excellent. I was going to post this, but you beat me to it! I manage online communities outside of SL, and I always point researchers to the AOIR when they ask about doing "research" in my communities.

I spend a lot of time on the AOIR website (the listserver archives are very nice). Lots of great stuff on it. Thanks for pointing it out.

I'm sure they are going to hop right on top of that assignment. Nothing like doing extra coursework one wont get graded on. You might find one or two eager beavers who naively think it will actually make a difference if they respond to this, but otherwise I wouldnt hold my breath.

LOL.

maybe the professor will consider in the next interation of the class.

on the other hand there are those people who do something just for the grade, and there are those who do things for the knowledge. it will is a sad world where learning, exploration, and innovation occurs only because one gets a grade or money for it.

Not really. Its all about interest. The body of knowledge is infinite .. no way anyone can learn it all. During the course of any education or career, there will be things that are learned because one HAS TO. The same time could be spent learning about stuff that that person is actually interested in.

I submit that EVERYONE has at one time or another in their life (and prolly many times had to learn about something only because they were forced to for a grade or money. Just how it always has been, how it is and how it always will be. Nothing sad about it .. its just an axiom.

How many of these poor college courses are we going to try to force to become about online research ethics?

As many as it takes until they're all forced off SL, apparently.

I think pointing students to a site like AOIR.org where they can learn about ethical ways of conducting research in the online world is fundamentally a good thing.

I'd think students would be excited to learn about this. Especially if these students are considering a potential future where they plan to study online communities, gain insights into their dynamics, and maybe someday develop their own online worlds.

In the end, we all win. Researchers and community members alike.
