Beware Bogus Biplanes

The other day, I noticed that someone was selling one of my biplanes at Oak Grove. That didn't bother me, since people have a right to re-sell things, as long as they don't sell copies of someone else's work. I thought it was strange that he was selling it for L$50 more than what I was selling it for in the same lot.

But I let it go.

Then yesterday, someone bought the bogus plane. It turns out that it had no script. Whoever the seller was, somehow got a modifyable model of my plane, removed the script for themselves, then put the scriptless plane up for sale... for more than the original price.

So... does anyone remember the name of the seller?

The bogus copy was located in the middle of Ben's lot in Oak Grove, beside the Cars section (mine is at the north end). I'd like to find out, because he cheated a buyer and damaged my rep.

Persmissions suck because they're not secure enough.

Make a modifiable object.
Add no-mod scripts.

New owner simply deletes the scripts from the object, and then adds other script(s) (or doesn't add as is the case here).

Give-Away should always be on. Resell should be an option and defaults to off.

Isn't the object a your work? I consider the prims, as well as the script, as your work. They've sold your work, and I have little doubt that they sold it as your work (not as their non-scripted object (which was your work to begin with).

There's something wrong, imho, when someone sells something you've given away (or sold). Let alone if they represent it as a working airplane (or whatever the original product was). They're selling your work, a misrepresentation of your work. Give away, sure that's fine and dandy. Sell? No, I disagree with this policy as it is now in game.

I really am not happy with permissions. I like the idea, but they're simply unsecure and incredibly confusing. Each entity's permissions should be seperate from any other entity. A hassel to setup? So be it, stick with the defaults. I hovwever don't mind spending 10 seconds setting permissions -- assuming they actually meant security.

You hit the nail on the head, Bos. That guy (I now know who he is, and his name begins with a "B" basically cheated a potential customer. It's sort of like reselling someone a Dell P4 for $2000, but removing the insides first. It's fraud.

I never *sell* objects with the modify permission turned on, but I have on a couple of occasions, given someone a modifyable copy of something, just so that they can paint it or texture it. I expect that this plane was handed from person to person and eventually wound up in B's hands.

I guess I can't give away mod'able things anymore, because they might eventually end up in the wrong hands. Very sad.

Cubey.. I am so sorry this happened to you. As someone who adores your work (even though I can't fire a gun much less fly a plane.. hehe) I can only imagine the hard work you put into your products. I also know you in a more social level, and I know you are a straight up kinda guy. I would send anyone I know to you in a heartbeat, and as a matter of fact, I have recommended your work to a few asking for vehicles of various kinds.

This prompts me to put in motion something I have been wanting to do. I am very opposed to "bad lists" because there is way to much potential for abuse. So instead, I'm going to start a list called "Pen's Seal of Wow". And I'm going to award it to creators and designers in the game that I feel are not only among the best on a creative level, but also on a customer relations level. I'll take submissions, but only after I have gotten enough of my own info will I issue this seal. And in there it will state that the seal does not apply if the product or service is not purchased directly from the creator.

Yep. Going to work on this tomorrow and start my list. Landmarks and all. And be damned those who try to harm the good name of the very people that make SL worth playing.

cubey.. do you install scripts? i have created a flying machine but dont have a good flight script for it. how much would it cost for a version of yours?

I can install a flight script, but the script would have to be no-copy/no-modify. So you could fly your plane model or sell/give the original, but not sell/give copies.
