http://www.sluniverse.com/forums/

The SLUniverse.com forums have been launched. The focus of these forums is to supplement the fourms available on SecondLife.com - not to replace them. The forums are feature equivalent to the SecondLife.com forums - I searched for forum software to purchase that was as close to the functionality and structure of these forums as possible.

The individual forums are still being adjusted - any suggestions would be appreciated - there is a forum specifically for forum ideas.

And to those who so far have helped out with the forums, I greatly appreciate it, and look forward to seeing new users in the future.

Just curious

I'm not putting your forums down, I'm just curious as to what they'd offer that these forums don't?

A -lot- of times in games, fan forums supply a definate need when the 'official' forums don't really offer a community feel; eq's a perfect example. The fan base there absolutely has to provide it's own forums to have discussions.

On the other hand, these forums offer the community a good place to discuss ideas and the Lindens actually talk to us like real people, not Customer disService Androids.

Aside from the freedom to flame, why go to your forums?

Again, not argueing here, just sincerely curious.

Jellin,

It is a perfectly legit question, I don't take it as an argument. In developing these forums, I asked myself that question too, and a lot of other people. The consensus has been to focus on offering some things that this forum does not - ie, there is not a forum for building/texturing, even though it is a very significant part of what we do in SL. Also, to provide a space that is not Linden controlled. While they have taken a hands off approach to these forums in terms of policing them, they are still owned by LL, and are not independent of the game. Ultimately, the usefulness of any fan site forums is determined by the users themselves. If there turns out not to be a need or interest, then I will rethink offering them. Thank you for your input :)

Yay!! Glad to see the forums "officially" opened Cris!

Any ETA yet on the rest of the site? From helping to test I know there are going to be a lot of great features that I'm looking forward to taking advantage of (both in participating and reading). So I'm just curious how it's coming along. :)

I'd love to see some space for individual groups to perhaps have forums hosted, I think that would be a great differentiator. Not sure what software you're using but I know it's very possible with phpBB to do such a thing (have experience with that).

Basically let a group request some forums, and give one of the members control over who gets access, etc.

YAY, the new forum is well needed. As Second Life grows there will be more people that will put junk and rants up in the official forums. And they are getting pretty full :P

but.....now There is going to say we are copying thereuniverse.com

Cienna,

The forums support private forums - I posted previously about it but did not get much response - I am definitely interested in offering them.

Copying there...? Well, if SL copies everything There has then there won't be any reason for people to play that, heh. Unless they like throwing money at zoo monkeys. But who does that these days?

Christiano:

Tried for a couple minutes to post a message on your forums and received ASP errors and finally when the post went through it was blank. Even after editing the blank message, it remained blank.

Let us know when you've got the forums working. I don't like wasting time writing a forum post and subsequently not be able to post it.

I had the same problem as Nicola when I was at work (Firebird), haven't tried posting at home with Safari yet.

Nicola,

People have been actively posting in the forums for weeks with no problem. I am sorry you had a difficulty with it. Without any additional information from you, however, there is nothing I can do - you did not indicate what web browser you were using, etc... or what the error message said.

Cienna,

Firebird is a very beta browser that I tend to even have problems with on common sites, and as the forum software is third party software, nothing I can do about compatibility with Firebird. It does appear to have some issues with posting from non-IE browsers - I sent an email to the developer of the forum software to see what I can find out.

Until further notice, non-Internet Explorer users should not attempt to post in the SLUniverse forums. I have contacted the developer the forum software to get the issue resolved - it appears to be minor. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I am happy to undo my previous post. SLUniverse.com's forums are now compatible with Mozilla and Netscape 7.1, among other browsers. For non-IE browsers, the formatted text editor is replaced with a standard text box for posting (sorry for advanced formatting, you need to use IE). It should now be compatible with all major web browsers. I have tested posting in the latest versions of Mozilla, Mozilla Firebird, and Netscape, with no issues after updating the forum software.
