Due to "crashing" issues that Linden is apparently unable to fix, my virtual movie theatres arent a workable concept in Second LIfe at this time. If viewers cant make it thru an entire film with having their SL crash, then the idea is untenable. Regretfully, Ive deleted my theatres (formerly in BISHOP), and Im selling off all of my land and tiering down to $0. Until Linden has fixed the technical problems to an acceptable degree, I wont be back except as an occasional freebie visitor to friends' land.

Also, they are going to have to lower their monthly fees, because in this worsening world economy, many people cant afford $50+ a month for a decent stretch of virtual land (and a decent amount of prims to use on it). I would ask this question of the Lindens: of all the "newbies" streaming into Second Life in "record numbers" ... how many of them are landless, and how many of them are signing up for the monthly tiers and purchasing large tracts of virtual land? Have a look at all of the empty land available currently, even in prime quality sims, for the answer to that.

See you at the movies again someday ... maybe.

I suspect a lot of the problem with the video is Quicktime and not just LL. This feature works best for fun, short flash movies and not anything beyond about 15 minutes. Its still cool, but yes, probably wouldn't work for you. Sorry about that.

Quicktime often crashes my machine without SL loaded when I'm watching anything of significant length.

Take care,

-Flip

Sorry to see you go. You were the ONLY one ANYWHERE that had "Nochnoi Dozor", which I had been dying to see.

If it makes you feel one tiny whit better, your movies always worked great for me.

Here's hoping to see you back in SL soon.

Quicktime works very well for showing images in world.

This is a potential attribution error. Could the problem in fact be in the operating system itself? From what I've heard of WinXP, I wouldn't be surprised if the fault lies not at the application layer but at the OS layer.

I only say this, as I run Quicktime on MacOS and, like everything on the system, its performance is solid.

On top of Quicktime I think it would be smart for LL to add support for other streaming media. Let's face it, QT sucks!

OMG!!! THE NIGHT WATCH!!! Haha you're into that too, eh? Hrmmm!

Alex I'm sorry to hear about your frustration. I've never really used video in SL much because I find it to be unstable, mainly on the SL side in my experience (lack of progress bar for buffering disconcerts me) and how movies don't sync up as well for viewers as they really could, unlike the rest of the SL experience, comparatively speaking.

While it probably would broaden their base a little, I don't think they should offer other stream formats simply on the premise that "QT sucks."

Quicktime is in fact a very powerful and quality piece of software. While the free plugin/player that most Windows users have is rather limited, I wouldn't use that as a judge of the underlying technology.

QT was in fact, a smart decision considering the varying amounts of formats supported alone.

What truly "sucks" is wmv and realvideo.

I'm with you on Real. But QT "sucks" infinitely "more" than WMP.

No, it would definitely be Apple's poor programming. Quicktime has historically been very buggy on Windows. On the other hand, I never have a problem with either Real Video or Windows Media - neither of which ever crash on me. QT crashes regularly - every version has been the same, including the current release. If it were simply an OS problem, then Real would also be vulnerable to problems. AOL's streaming video technology is also fine - no crashes. However, it is a fundamental problem with Apple's windows release, which has always been substandard (after all these versions, you still cannot do full screen video through the web page plugin). On top of that, there is far more streaming content available online in WM and RM. It is a shame that we are hobbled by using a buggy platform like Quicktime.

Take Cris' word on this. :) He has downloaded enough pr0n videos in various formats and various lengths to last him a... a... well, at least a good week until he starts downloading more. :-P

Exactly, there is just no good porn in Quicktime format.

Sorry it didn't work out Alex. I like the idea of theaters, or even drive-in movies out in the landscape. Hope the technology catches up with your ideas. :)
