Texture Question

I was wondering... which texture type takes longer to lead? JPEG, BMP or TGA?
Does it matter? Is there anything I can do (before uploading) to make my texture load faster?

I'm no texture expert, but my own rule is simply file size. I'm pretty sure uploaded BMPs are converted on SL's side, perhaps to tga. Just assuming, but using BMPs for this app (streaming/bandwidth/loadtimes) is pretty silly, as they tend to be huge in size.

I just wish PNG was supported instead of jpeg...

I think everything is converted to jpeg2000. So just image size counts.

Yeah its all jpg2000, and size is what matters. I use .tga's almost exclusively but I'm not hurting for disk space.

Are you doing animation or scripted texture switching? If so then you need to do some preloading. Stick the textures on the sides or backs of prims that aren't beign used for anything. Or make a new object that has the textures on it and is black. That really helps.

Is this 'size' file size or resolution?

Always helps to clarify, especially for people who are doing various events based on series of pictures.

Resolution.

Of course there is the possibility that some formats convert differently. I would imagine that the same image in .tga and .jpg and .bmp would convert to jpeg2000 at approximatly the same file size. I could be wrong in that assumption, but I am fairly sure that all images are converted to jpeg2000 before upload (client side) and that certain constraints are placed on size and dimensions. Thats a reason images with dimensions that are powers of 2 are clearer I think.
