I was on this web page and also signed into SL itself and I got a java popup from "Groopz". Before I even saw what it was, I killed it. I guess I should have read it but I HATE spam so I didnt.

Has anyone else had this happen? Was it a fluke from someone else or is this a SL website thing or ?? what ??

I searched google and it seems to be a customer service tool for websites.

Any other insight anyone?

Download Ad-Aware. You've probably been infected with spyware.

You frequently get unwanted files just by surfing the net. Some are worse than others. The best file cleaner I have found is, Spybot Search and Destroy. It finds many files and suspect registry settings tha Ad-Aware over looks.

You can get info about it and download it here: http://www.safer-networking.org/

Oh, and btw, I have not seen any popup on the SL website.

I'm paranoid when it comes to the web. I'm behind both a hardware and software firewall, and I use Pest Patrol, AdAware, Spybot AND The Cleaner and well as Norton.

Yeah, I go overboard, but I got a virus once --- never again!.

Why use all those to do scans? I've run tests, scanning with them one after the other, just to see, and there's always some things that each of them will miss that the others will catch. Like rock-paper-scissors.

My HD is squeeky clean.

And your CPU spends 5 cycles for every 1 cycle deciding if that 1 cycle was ok. ;)

Whoa Jellin...

But I think you still have a security hole. Is the computer passworded? If not, someone *could* (theoretically) turn it on, and *could* (theoretically) screw things up by installing stuff manually, and *could* (theoretically) write their own trojan that nobody knows about and install that, and *could* even (theoretically) uninstall/alter your protections....and....

(Sorry, teasing the paranoid is fun :D )

Try turning off your Microsoft Messenger (not MSIM). If someone knows your IP address (not hard to get) they can send you a pop-up IM message. It's a very low-tech hacker wannabe thing. It's also a good and fun way to annoy your co-workers when they are giving a Power Point presentation to the boss. From the DOS shell you can just type netsend <IPADDRESS> <message> to do this. Spammers have found this and just brute force cycle through IP address numbers and send popups. May they suffer a cruel death!!!

Here's how to turn it off:
1. control panel
2. Administrative Tools
3. click on Services
4. Withing Services locate "Messenger" and hit properties
5. From properties "Stop" the service and disable "Startup Type."
*This will have no impact on other messengers like AIM, MSIM, etc... it has nothing to do with them

I hope this helps.

I check my system regularly and usually dont have these types of issues. This Messinger one is a new one on me though. I just did it, thanks.

Yeah the Messenger is only useful for practical jokes and spamming. It's been around for a long time and recently the spammers have been going crazy with it. If you have a great firewall, AV, and Spyware scanner that's a wonderful thing, but they are not going to stop the Messenger service. I received a few annoying pops a few months ago before shutting them down and haven't heard from them since.

The next release of XP is supposed to have Messenger service turned off by default, which should help. It's original purpose was to allow Windows boxes on a network to receive popup messages from system administrators for things such as impending network shutdowns. However, like so many good things, it is being exploited by the less scrupulous. Most pop-up stoppers, etc. do not affect it since it was designed to be for things like **important** messages from net admins.

I've got a simpler solution: I use Linux.
