Has anyone ever had this happen? Where people ask what your name is and if/when you do tell them, they repeat the wrong name. For instance, when people ask what my name is, I say "Aaron." Is it just me or do people always think I say Derek, Eric or Darren? I know I'm pretty softspoken, but .... UGH! The least they could do is pay attention to what my name is! To some people this might seem like a silly rant, but I am a twin and I have become accustom to people mistaking me for my other half. I'm an individual damn it!
*Phew! Rant Over* Now back to the regularly scheduled dramafest :D.

Ose! I have the same problem and I *always* have to spell my name.

As Aaron is a fairly easy name to register in the brain and as such is probably more of a reflection of them. With that, I offer up a suggestion:

When they ask you your name, reply with: "It's SIR! And the next time, only speak when you're spoken to!"

That should shut them up.

Not my first name, no.

My last name, hell yeah. Even the gummint gets it wrong. >_<

One of these days I'm gonna snap and change my last name to Smith. :D

I don't have that problem, but almost everyone pronounces my SL name wrong.

(hint: it's not sigh-oh-ban)

Wow, thanks for mentioning me Khamon! I so rarely get mentioned these days in the forums. Wait, what am I complaining about? ;)

I think, and really its up to speculation, that you are adding a syllable to my SL name. It comes from the greek root Oneiros which means dreamscape, which to me seem like it would only have three syllables. It basically means dream explorer. It was a term coined in the 70s by lucid dreaming researchers. I've been using it on the net for a while, and seemed like it was appropriate for SL.

I hear in my head: On-near-uh-not, or something like that. Some people have thought I was making a sound pun for On Here or Not, which I'll gladly take the credit for because wasn't that clever of me? :P

Most people tend to go with Oneir for short, or the familiar Onei. At first, Onei seemed a bit cutesy for me, but I've come to take it as a term of affection as it comes from some of the best peeps in SL. There's a rumor flying about that I detest being called One. This isn't true really. I actually kind of like being called One, it's just with people like One Song in game, it can get confusing. I don't like being called one though as I never read that as a name, and tend to read it with a royal british accent.

Really though, you can call me anything, just as long as you call :)

My parents friends used to always get my name wrong. After a couple of years of always correcting them I just gave up and let them call me "Skip" instead of Chip.

I always think it's pronounced Sh-e-bawn, I knew a Siobhan at school and then there was the woman in Shakespeare's Sister, married to the guy from the Eurythmics... ;)

I usually get called Brett in RL instead of Brad... or Bray-dee instead of Br-add-ee (pokes Rosa) :P

I tend to get variations on my name - lots of Christian's, Christophers, Chris, etc.. The lack of an h and the o at the end just seems to throw people off. I've even gotten Cristobal, Christina (yes, Christina) and Cristofo. I think people are just lazy in general - they only focus as long as they have to and then discard what you've just said.

You would be surprised how often my last name (Diaz) also gets mispelled or pronounced. I get "DIE-AS", "DEES", etc..

On a side note, people always stick an h in my name, and have a weird habit of splitting my name as Crist or Christ.

I always just pronounced it Brad-y.

Someone once confessed that they were pronouncing my SL name Drawin'. As in the colloqueal way of saying darwing. To save them the embarassment, I won't mention their name here. :D

My RL 1st name is Christopher (I am called Chris though) For some reason, throught out my life some people refer to me as Jeff. Which obviously is not even a mispronounciation of Chris.

In primary and secondary school I just assumed a guy named Jeff that I looked like must have gone through the system before me.

But then in the military it happened. And in College. It has when meeting new people through other circumstances. LOL.

One day it occurred to me that my last name has a syllable in it that rhymes with Jeff. This must be the connection? LOL, not sure. Either that or some creepy guy named Jeff has Been shadowing me for 30 odd years :)

After hearing quite a few SL DJs, I realize that if they're at all representative of most SLers, 4 our of 5 people are pronouncing my SL name wrong. I always hear it as Jon-Quil, but.. it's pronounced with a soft J (as in Jean-Luc Picard) and a long E sound at the end.. Keel. Jean-Keel.

As for my real life name, no one mispronounces it, but people seem to think it's fine to change it at will, to whatever they think is cute at the time.

My name is Trish. Yet more often than not, people will try to call me Trisha, or Patricia, or Pat. It's just Trish. No A, no Pat.. just.. Trish. I can show my social security card and driver's license to prove it, but I have the feeling it would be a wasted effort, so I simply don't respond to anything but Trish.

Yes, I have had this problem all my life too. :(

My name is pronounced TA-vah, with a long A in the first syllable, but it never fails that everyone pronouces it Tah-vah instead. I don't even correct em anymore.

My middle name is a bit better, but not much. Gwendolyn, but shortened by my parents to Gwen most of my childhood. I get a lot of people who think I said Glenn. Now who the hell ever heard of a woman named Glenn? At least that is only every once in a while.

Don't even get me started on my last name...it's unpronouncable to most...bleh.

The stupid text-to-speech proggies usually pronounce my name (Jorge) as WHORE-GAY! :D
It's actually more or less like George, but with a softer J, like Jonquille explained above, and the final E is mute. More like "shorsh".
