Who has "the vision"?

Believe it or not, Second Life has an extremely high amount of things it could be used for. The list is rather endless, but chatter of this list is very minimal in the forums nowadays, and it kinda makes me sad.

So, I post here tonight asking: "Do you have the vision?"

The question is basically asking if you can think of exactly how far Second Life can go... exactly what are the things it can be capable of, without the limits of hardware and money. Imagine Second Life in 10 years. Imagine Second Life in 40 years.

Do you have the vision? And if so, what can you see?

I see The Matrix.

Or something simular :P. Basicly as technology improves and SL along with it, things will become more and less realistic, more realistic in the sense of physics and such, less realistic as in we still can fly and do whatever we want and build whatever we want within it.

Everything will be fully customizable, interface, your appearence, gestures, you can be a fully skeletal and animated animal (rather than objects), stream live video and audio, you could be a giant walking tv with a live feed of yourself as you talk to others, mask your voice if you want to, speech to text. Etc.

Its hard to guess how much advanced we'll be in 10 years, you either shoot too low, or shoot too high, hard to find a safe middle of "this will be what it will be like", I could say we'll have full 3D thats directly sent to our brain through neurotransmitting device that we wear that sends neurological impulses to our brains through radio-waves, you can then touch, feel, smell, hear, see, everything and think you're actualy there when you aren't, most likely I would be totaly wrong, but then again aliens could come from space and give us the cheap technology. Or there could be some major leaps in technology within 5 years. :P

let's start small..
04-07-2004 10:19
what about now?

what things can we do now?

what boundaries can we push?

can we influence RL instead of RL influencing us?

what kind of unique buildings can we create.. things that put our best to shame?

what kind of scripts can be written.. scripts that make jaws drop?

look to what we have to work with now.. for this is what will determine what comes to fruition in the future.

hind-sight is 20/20.. let's be proud of what we remember.

I can see it as a virtual classroom. The instructor could have both visual and textual material for lessons. The students could ask questions, and even work on projects together. Prolly a lot more they could do in that environment.

Penn state is actually doing a mudd based VRE...I am talking to one of the proffesors about checking out sl. I think that it would be a perfect application for many students especially if they can communicate over teamspeak while working in the classroom vr. PennMoo is interesting but it is not a graphically interesting program and most students become disinterested in short order. Sl on the otherhand is full of graphical goodies.

Other ideas:

Test marketing clothing lines (once the world get larger)
Creation of virtual models for rl architecture that can be accessed by people collaborating on a design.
Therapy for homebound patients and skills learning for people of varying ability
A closed island set for use by highschool students (maybe even remedial students in inner cities with little access to programs such as these)
I know most people don't want a disney version of sl but with the new ability to buy seperate islands...I don't see a problem with having a closed set or continent for underaged people that the over agers are not allowed access to. It would open alot of doors for sl.
Creation of districts or continents for different purposes would be nice. I would love to see a mature continent, a rl driven continent (for people who want to market rl products), an educational continent for university use, a minor continent ect while being able to keep the virtual real-estate free form continent as well.

Dave Zeeman, very few people have "the vision." They all just want to have "fun." Seriously, read my posts, that's what people keep saying. If you want a 3D world with potential, you'll be hard pressed to get it out of Second Life. If you are serious about thinking SL has potential as...

1. a tool of collaborative, online part prototyping, toy building, building design

2. a place that archetectural firms could use to walk investors through building models

3. a distance learning classroom for showing off molecular structures in real-space, math procedures on a "white board" prim, playing music or language sounds

4. a common ground for growing A.I. and genetic algorithms

5. a platform for online stores (talk to catnip Foo about this, he's got some GREAT theories)

...message me sometime. It would be "fun" to meet a like-minded person. :)

Edit: I wish I'd read your post, Aliena Serpentine, before I posted. Therapy is a great idea!

i see ati catalyst drivers 9.7 finally mentioning second life 'all known problems with second life have been found and fixed' unfortunately by that time the entire 3d scene will be owned by the bitboys so no one will care

i see that with the pending release of second life 11.23.23.7b the first parts of havoc2 will be implemented.

I also see that in mid 2008 the scripts will finally expand to 32kb memory allocation finally enabling the simultion in game, of a vintage 1992 ti-81 calculator

ooh and they promise to have custom animations working in the game by version 14.7 or whenever duke nukem forever is released since they've been working together with the apogee team to get the most realistic as possible 'bad ass mofo with a gun' strut pose for the past 12 years

Second Life could be used for virtually ANYTHING and that's the exact reason I got into it. I'm a big fan of "total environments" as Anton LaVey calls them. When I get into any sort of game, I don't level up, make money, kill things, strive to have the most/best possessions...I walk around exploring, I put myself in the world and become the character. Whenever I play Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind I go somewhere and read one of their many in-game books. When I play Dark Age of Camelot (I LOVE medieval stuff like that) I pretend to be the knight in shining armor, and I'll sometimes spend an hour "standing guard" at a bridge. When I'm playing Second Life, I ride my motorcycle around (that is, until the lag bugs me up and I lose the bike =( ) and explore the world. One of my favorite things to do is go to that Cayman Island place and ride around on the free boat rentals. There's nothing much to "do" or "see" there, but I love the thought of a quiet sail across the lake.

What I'd like to see Second Life become is this sort of total immersion that I seek. Places where you can actually live...I don't mean JUST buying landing and building houses if you have lots of money, I mean apartments as well. I want lots of books to read, music to listen to..that sort of thing.
The vehicles could and should also be taken to an awesome new level. Let's say that for now, they're rather crude and unrealistic...I want to drive across the entire world (which I hope would be much, much bigger) in my old car, driving on the proper side of the road staying in my lane, applying gas and brake. I'd like to get into an airplane on a real runway and fly somewhere, then have to land (airplanes also don't have reverse =P).

You know, I have no idea what this post is about or what I was trying to say any more, but yeah.

so like, you guys want second life to become another dimension exactly the same as the current, but with bad character models? Sounds interesting, but I think SL will die long before we have the technology (or bandwidth) for it to get THAT realistic, or in depth... or really improve much at all lol

I'd like it to become a world simulator. Just like first life, but with anything possible. I can't very well go have a gunfight while riding an emu in the real world, now can I?

I could see more potential for SL if the server tech was leased out or made open-source and the client became a browser. It would be neat to see how fast SL could develop if it became a distributed network rather than a closed one.

Basically, (and especially with the new I/O features we'll have acess to w/ xml-rpc) I could see SL becoming the tech that drives the 'net to become a more collaborative sensually appealing environment. Optical advancements due out soon will enhance the experience for sure... but this is of course if LL chooses to overcome the limitations of the old capitalist economic model and find a way to survive by sharing it's technology.

Heck, I'd settle for the simulation of an unexpanded 1981 Commodore VIC-20 with BASIC 2.0.

10 PRINT "JUSTICE WAS HERE";
20 GOTO 10

READY.
RUN

Wooooo!

OOO I like this thread....I am a person who is always looking at the bigger picture....I tend to think on big scale instead of some things I should really be concentrating on. I am the kid the does stare out the window and thinks about distant galexies and really find myself so microscopic and my troubles silly......I think about SL and the things we do there how they will apply to future ways of life....I get excited to see us progress then when something regresses it seems like in no time that setback is made up and we are off and running again. It seems that once something is finally accomplished if we loose it then its more readily redone, better, faster, easier. I lol....think of the "collective"...and how it takes eveyone doing just what they are doing to make the next step. I see what people think about they bring about to......

It will be interesting to see how SL will effect the future...and right now it maybe just a small amount of us in this effort but I just know that someday our efforts will impact a massive scale of people in the real world for their everyday way of lives........and we were there first......WOOOOOOOT

Maybe in the future, that inability to trigger state_entry recursively bug may be worked out :D

IOW: With today's SL, youll only see that state_entry event once :-p
