Ok. This new "Talk To" feature has become a major annoyance primarily because of the way it's used.

It seems now that whenever I come to an event, I get 2-3 people that use the "talk to" feature to try to chat with me instead of just speaking in public or using IM.

What's more are those people who attept to "Talk to" you more than once after you have denied the first request, so far I have been flooded twice by two different users who repeated the request a total of 3 times in a row.

When people meet for the first time you don't attempt to coral them into a private conversation in the middle of a crowded room as they are greeting others. And I know that I prefer not to have "pviate only talks" with people I meet for the first time. I like to socialize in public, not in private :) and it seems that most who prefer to talk to you via IM only also prefer other things...

Oh and another tip on first greetings, *kisses* from strangers, in my book are not welcomed, I do not care if the person is from Holland or "Eurocentric", I do find it to be overly forward and presumptuous and the fact that SL is "game" or 'not-reality' makes it no less real feeling as many of us do /kiss in game and it is with somone we care about.

Did I mention the guy that IM'd me with a: "A/S/L"? Thats a thread for a different time if it becomes a trend.

Can we have an abuse pop-up for this?

You know, "bumped", "pushed with a script" "hit with an object" "A/S/L'ed"

Oh and Don, A/S/L is IM-speak for "Age, Sex, Location?" and is a prelude to relentless 14-yr old hitting upon.

I don't mind the A/S/L if if comes up after a bit of chatting. If its the first thing they ask it can be annoying.

Being asked my A/S/L doesnt bother me - but until I get to know someone, they don't get to know anything else about my FL than that.

But yeah, it's obvious when it's the first thing youre asked, that you are probably talking to a youngster. 99% of SL'ers who ask me these things tend to ask them as separate questions, and even then they only ask my location.

"Sitting in my chair" just doesnt get the laughs it used to :D

That "A/S/L" thing is annoying (though i've never had anyone do it to me, all of them are in my profile anyways)

And the "talk to" feature has been a pain, since you do it once and you cant move at all, I for one, never use it, why would I want "semi-privacy" anyways, I just use IMs to be private, and normal chat to not, there's no inbetween for me, and I dont know what everyone else is like.

I think you're looking too deeply into the "kisses" thing, People are just very friendly, and you shouldnt be taking offense to just 1 word.

On kisses: You can kiss me all you want, I don't mind. But I would not randomly go about kissing others, since some would find it inappropriate.

On ASL: Age, I was born 8/18/03. Sex, which avatar do you mean? Location, Blue 242,216...

On Talk To: No sir, I don't like it. I've only had it offered to me once, and that by a certain reporter that will go unnamed. ;) But for his case, it makes sense. He can tag you from afar to see if you want to talk. But I hate how it locks you into one position, and certain camera angles. It may interrupt other conversations you are having, and can making editing something impossible. It's jarring, inconvenient, and unnecessary. Replace the Talk To with IM.

On the Talk To feature, I have to say that I did try it and couldn't see the sense. I expected that someone might come along some day and explain the point. Otherwise I was going to just side-step any questions new folks might ask me about it ;-)

As for A/S/L, this is just another version of what we used to call MorFing. "M or F?"

Then, as now, it is just an easy way to tell immature people from everyone else. Whenever I get MorFed, I simply enjoy the fact that I don't have to spend extra time finding out about a person who isn't willing to spend extra time finding out about me :-)

Feature Request time!

How about... a "Don't bother me with..." list!

You have a window with checkboxes for various things. The top says "Don't bother me with..." and checks for:

Regular chat, IM chat, IM Group chat, talk to, sounds (object/avatar triggered), control-taking, card-trading, rating messages, money messages.

The list goes on!

<salesman>All of these feature requests for "Don't Bother Me" can be answered with a quick and easy fix! Takes only five seconds to do! And it's FREE!

...All ya gotta do, all ya gotta do, is unplug the modem/router! </salesman>

*running like heck*

That said, an ignore list sounds like a nice idea. We've got that capability with IRC and Usenet for ignoring/killfiling people, so it'd be interesting to see that implemented in SL.
