I am just curious why SL is an adult only game if there are PG areas? I am 18 and since I am still in High School I have many friends that want to play. So I was just wondering. But I dont want anyone yelling at me telling me how horrible it would be if kids could play... I so have heard that speil before and one time is enough.

There are plans to implement a teen grid in SL although I don't know what the time frame is for launch. This has been an ongoing debate. A PG sim is still for adults, it's just a place where if a person is offended by adult anims, nudity, and so on you can hang out. Among lots of other reasons. However, PG sims are next to Mature sims, and one can easily fly from a PG sim to a Mature sim. In a mature sim we all know general rampant hedonism has been known to occur, to which I say: woot. Anyway: point being, that a freshman in high school does not have access to go buy their own porn in RL and shouldn't have exposure to it in SL either. Thus the argument for a teen grid, in part, coming soon to an SL near you.

Even us adults sometimes like to get away from all the F&^% and SH%$ you hear in everyday language, also the smut and blatant pron of everday life. The PG areas aren't intended as 'childrens areas' but simply places where "adult" behavior should be tamed down.

If you were walking down your main street you wouldn't expect to see posters of naked people engaging in assorted pleasures, and the same goes for the 'pg' areas in SL.

Well that is true but I dont know if high school has changed but it isnt exactly a... hmm... I suppose you would say... a place with morals... Perhaps you have heard of the RL school in which there were students... hmm... doing the "naughty cha-cha"...lol in the stairwell! Well that isnt moral... infact it is stupid... So... That is why I ask because high school is hardly a "clean" place as SL is both clean and unclean so is highschool..

I've often wondered if the Lindens weren't being discretely pejorative in using the phrase PG for non-mature sims. Because yes, "Parental Guidance" is a strange thing to suggest in a game limited to adults

But to answer your question, there are people who don't want to see mature content... at least not mature content selected for them by their neighbors That's the only explanation I know.

I've always owned land in PG sims, but that's to help avoid large spinning billboards and busy clubs. Every PG sim I've been in has had plenty of mature stuff going on behind clsoed doors anyway.

As Surina implied, it's basically the one form of zoning currently integrated into SL. In addition, there are legal implications associated with the age restrictions enforced within SL. For instance, I am sure LL is seeking to protect minors from "predatory" adults in the main grid, and wants to limit its exposure to legal liability in that regard.

well teen grid is supposed to be only for teens so no adult members can go between it and regular SL plus i'm guessing the teen grid will require parental permission forms and will get "policed" by Lindens similar to the regular SL. probably nothing will guarantee no adults sneak in other than not having it in the first place but hey....there's always some risks.

The idea is that the ONLY adults (18+) on the teen grid will be LindenLab employees. It is down to LL to ensure that no adults get accounts on the system just as they try to prevent minors getting onto the main grid. How successful they will be we will probably never know as we won't be allowed there to check it out...

I'm hardly naive about the realities of high school I work with at-risk teenagers as a full time job. Linden Labs isn't responsible for what goes on in schools or society at large. They are responsible for trying to take steps to protect minors here...and that's where I'll stop my comments because otherwise I'll debate all night. Are there minors in SL with parents' credit cards? Of course. Minors also manage to buy lots of things they shouldn't irl. Doesn't mean no rules apply REfer back to all the old threads on the teen grid if you're curious about public opinion on it. It's very extensive

The primary reason that SL is 18+ only is that is keeps LL from having to have a content approval process like There does. We'd either have to have our creative freedoms severely restricted or have everything uploaded to SL be approved as safe for children.

That is stupid... if children are on here it is their fault if they go and look at naked people... IMO.. But really now. What would happen if a Minor was found to be ingame... would they get kicked out? I dont know, but it seems to me, that lots of kids buy crap with mummy and daddys credit cards that their parents say is ok... so if parents are enabling the children then why not let them in?

Because that's all well and good until Mum & Dad find out their kid is making huge walking dildos in SL on their dime, and decide to sue Linden Labs for allowing their child to see/participate in adult content. Stupid? Yep. Of course it should be up to the parents to control what their child does. But the plain and obvious fact is here in the ol' US, people will sue over anything they can. The onus is on LL to keep under-18 people from seeing the mature content in the SL adult grid. Only way to do that is to make the (adult) grid 18 and over, period.

And yes, minors get banned from SL if they're found out.

no sir, lol I am glad that you think that I am immature or something... I already told you I was 18, but I have friends. And so I was just curious what would happen if they snuck in... And no I am not going to smuggle them into any place.
