Which came first - Gopher or Mosaic? Put on you thinking caps I was given this question in work. Lets see who get the answers.

Gopher....around 1992

Actually Gopher was around back in the late 70's...Always giving Captain Stubing all sorts of trouble...

Gopher is a protocol. The RFC for it was published March 1993.

Mosaic is a program. According to www.tcpipguide.com Mosaic, was created by the National Center for Supercomputer Applications (NCSA) in 1993. No month stated... so... still no answer.

I used gopher (unix had a built-in gopher client - had to type gopher at the command line) years before mosaic came out. Gopher was kinda like a menuing system. If you ever used the early internet accessible cellular phones, or the library catalog systems, it will give you an idea of how gopher was like.

From about 1992 through 1996, Gopher was an Internet application in which hierarchically-organized text files could be brought from servers all over the world to a viewer on your computer. Especially in universities, Gopher was a step toward the World Wide Web's Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which effectively replaced it within a short time. With hypertext links, the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), and the arrival of a graphical browser, Mosaic, the Web quickly transcended Gopher. Gopher was developed at the University of Minnesota, whose sports teams are called "the Golden Gophers."

Although most Gopher browsers and files are text-based, Gopher browsers, notably HyperGopher, were developed that displayed graphic images (GIF and JPEG files) that were included in Gopher file directories. Two tools for searching Gopher file hierarchies were Veronica and Jughead.

Although the root directory for Gopher is sometimes still accessible at the University of Minnesota or elsewhere and despite some efforts to revive Gopher, virtually all Gopher servers are no longer active. It seems likely that almost all of the original Gopher content has been made accessible on the World Wide Web.

Gopher is a distributed document search and retrieval network protocol designed for the Internet. It was released in 1991 by Paul Lindner and Mark McCahill of the University of Minnesota.

Mosaic is a web browser (client) for the World Wide Web written at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). Its development began in 1992 and officially ceased on January 7, 1997.

Mosaic was first as it was a style of placing tile in ornamental pictures in builds dating back to 2000 BC. However Gopher wasn't defined within the realm of the rodent sub family till the mid 1600s by early explorers of the New Land now known as the United States.

She didn't ask if it was defined...she asked which was first and I seem to recall a prehistoric gopher before mosaic ( circa 1823) ...unfortunately it was wiped out by the vermiscous knid in the early 19th century just before clothing was invented and people walked upright.

LMAO but you have to concede the first time the word Gopher was used was the early 1600's for the "modern" gopher of the appalachin mountain range.. Even though the actuall prehistoric one was defined latter in 1823.
