I noticed that when I save pictures from the net, the save option defaults whatever pic I an saving to, "untitled / bitmap". It used to save the pics by their name and format, but now its always untitled / bitmap, I dont have the option to save the format in anything other than bitmap. I been tweaking security settings and this may be the culprit, but I dont know what to change to allow saving pics with their original name and format. Anyone have any ideas?

a1: www.getfirefox.com
a2: something happened to my windows explorer that causes the default action on a *.zip file to be equivalent to pressing F3 (search) which is extremely un-useful. I could call Microsoft Support who would tell me to reinstall windows, or I could search through the registry for HKLM/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/DoSomethingUtterlyUselessWhenClickingZipFiles

I tend to think of our favorite OS as a game with inscrutible rules which change randomly. It may not get me far, but it certainly lowers the angst. :p

Internet Explorer is a bigger problem than just saving pictures. By using IE you leave your computer wide open to all sorts of crap, like spyware, worms, trojans, hackers, identity theft.
I dumped IE over 5 years ago. First I switched to Opera, since it was much leaner and more featureful (Up to 2001 I had a crappy pentium mmx-233 with only 32 megs of ram!)
Then Mozilla popped up and I switched to that... then phoenix/firebird/firefox came along. I've never looked back. Can't live without my tabs :)

I am trying Firefox again. I thought this is how this thread would go.

For what its worth, Loki, I've had that same problem happen to me before.

As I recall, it's been a while, but I think clearing my cache fixed it. Not sure why.

Yeh, clearing the cache should fix it.

If clearing the cache doesn't fix IE, try purchasing an Apple or installing Linux. I've had great success with both these methods.

The problem is caused when a "damaged" or "unknown" program is sitting in your
"%systemroot%\Downloaded Program Files" folder (usually C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files). The fix is simple. First, empty your Temporary Internet Files to clear the cache (In IE, go to Tools: Internet Options, and chose "Delete Files" in the "Temporary Internet Files" section of the first tab). Next, browse to your 'Downloaded Program Files' folder, and delete any program that is listed as either "unknown" or "damaged." That should do it. Some users have found that other applications downloaded into that folder can cause the problem. If the above fix does not work, you may need to start removing those applications one by one to find the offender. Once the offending program is deleted, you should be able to save as the appropriate image type again.

Also make sure your browser cache size isn't set to something stupidly big, which IE is wont to do by default (like, a 1GB browser cache? WTH?). Keep it below 200meg and that should help prevent recurrances of this one.
