http://www.wired.com/news/games/0,2101,59675,00.htmli think its one of the better articles i've read about SL. it focused a bit more on the fact that this is a community thang. i found it interesting (and fitting) that it mentioned something that happened primarily on the forums in the review of the game. check it out. its short but sweet.

From: someone "This one guy who built and sold guns had this little gun shop in the hinterlands.... And the WWII Onliners got on their little island, which happened to be next to this guy's gun shop. In one week, he made $100,000 (in game currency) selling guns to these guys. That was just the coolest thing." Wasn't that Yuniq? I thought she was a girl, unless she never told me something about her.

I was thinking the same thing, Hikaru. Maybe Yuniq had some identity problems...

From: someone Originally posted by James Miller I was thinking the same thing, Hikaru. Maybe Yuniq had some identity problems... Or the wired reporter assumes every game player is male. Did anyone else find this article a little weak? Not to deride all the fun we get from them, but, you know, ooooh, trivia games on line, ooooh, now that's innovative! There's a lot of other stuff the reporter coulda focused on.

From: someone Originally posted by Wednesday Grimm Or the wired reporter assumes every game player is male. The quote is actually from Philip Rosedale, not the reporter. Perhaps Philip (accidentally) revealed his inside knowledge of the player behind Yuniq Epoch.

I had an email exchange with the reporter and from what he told me I expected more than was written. He said he wanted to focus on things in the game that developed outside of what you might have expected and he asked what sort of things were really cool and innovative.
I was expecting the article to be much meatier... and to have more comments from more residents. I know several had email exchanges from him and the quotes were few.

Yes, I e-mailed him the same day Robin posted in the Announcements forum, and he responded with 10 questions for me about my taxi service. I quickly replied, and I didn't hear from him again. My e-mail was quite long, answering each question with many details. I only got a single mention. Misnomer, I am in total agreement with you, the article was not as meaty as I was expecting. It was only a page and a half! Oh well, I at least hope it gets some publicity for SL!

come on guys..it's just like when we'd write research papers in school. you'd take all those books and articles and only take one little fact from each one then you'd triple-space the whole thing to cram as little as possible into the required pages. i don't know why you'd think it would be different in "the real world"

Judging from the experience of people I know -- and my own experience -- in being quoted, I think this is standard operating procedure for journalists; they collect a lot of information and extract what few sound bites will fit in the tiny space they're allotted.
If Wired were to do a feature article on SL (and wouldn't that be great?), then we'd see something really meaty. And maybe this short piece will eventually lead to bigger things.

Coming in from a writer's perspective: when you do these interviews, you really have to plan on maybe just one or two lines getting into the piece, if you're lucky. There's just too much material to work with, and so much space you have to spend, in this case, in explaining what the heck Second Life is in the first place. My editor at Salon is an exception, in that he'll let me go on and on (and on) for up to 5000 words, but Salon is a more "magaziney" type publication, while Wired's online site is very blurby, 1200-1500 word newsie type deal.
I mean, I myself gave the guy an 800+ word response to his interview questions, and I don't think he quoted me even once. But again, no harm no foul, it was still a good piece. (And I'll just run my unpublished interview in Notes!)
