Maybe it was a hand me down and/or they can't afford a more expensive card.

(SL) PC specifications:

* Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce 2 (32MB RAM) or higher, or ATI Radeon 8500 (32MB RAM) or higher.

Go to this url and to make sure you have the latest drivers;

Are you getting a specific error message? Does it say it's the video card that is the issue?

Since we're talking PCI here I am assuming you have an older motherboard; have you checked to see if you can upgrade your chipset or BIOS?

Just a thought:

The early GeForce cards were notorious for being power hogs. They didn't play well with low powered computers. I recall reading in a few places that if you are running with less than a 300 watt power supply, performance was iffy. Also, they were known to heat up a bit, but not as bad as the original GeForce cards.

At this point, its better to make sure your video drivers are up to date, and maybe a BIOS upgrade is necessary. Also make sure the little things, like making sure the card, memory and anything else that could come loose is seated. Never start buying new stuff until all the simple (and free) things have been checked.

If all else fails, and the card is truly bad, consider returning it and if possible, moving up to at least a FX 5200 card. They do come in PCI versions as well.

Ahh, you may be onto the problem there. I had to buy a more powerful power supply when I bought a GeForce4 a couple years back.

You may want to download a benchmarking program like 3DMark and run it to see if you can render 3D at all. If you cannot, it may be the power issue. I believe Direct X can also test rendering.
