I think people are forgetting that this is not just one problem being fixed through this 1.2 change--rather, there are cumulative fixes in this update:

1. Prim Hogging will be fixed
2. "whinebickermoan There's no land!!!" will be fixed (see below)
3. Those who got rich off early investments into cheating (tax dodging, earlier times when there was no stipend cap, etc.) or are rich by any other means (*wavewaveAma, hehe*)will still be above and beyond the rest of the players, but will not be able to own 25% of the servers' resources
4. People who play this game to socialize and not go wacky with building and scripting and land owning will no longer have to pay monthly fees

Just imagine what is going to happen. Prim hogging will slowly vanish. Can you even fathom what kind of change that will cause? Land hoggers will either have to USE their land and benefit from it through Dwell or give up their land, as many have wanted for so, so long now. Socializers who aren't big builders don't have to fanaticize over the $15/month fee--now, you get what you pay for. You are purchasing server resources, which is more practical than what has been happening.

If you think about it, any time someone new enters the game, 3500 enters the economy. Then, that person leaves--that's a drastic addition to the economy for every person who comes and goes. Naturally, this is the best way to deal with that. L$ will be less representative of the value of the individual's ownership of the game--those with the L$ will no longer buy out simulators and all the prims.

Personally, I think this is a brilliant plan. Most people going over the new prim limits should perhaps consider the effectiveness of this new scenario in terms of what it will do for players who currently have difficulties owning land. I'm not talking about the people with 40x40 over the land cap who might have to scrape the edges of their plots--I'm talking about those who clearly own more land in the game than the Lindens do.

If all else fails to wet your whistle, just wait and see what will happen once 1.2 comes out. There's a good chance that new sims might not even need to open up; in fact, I'm counting on that.

You can still hoard money and have gold plated toilet seats. :) The only difference will be that now when one does this it will not be at the cost of server resources and other players' expense.

Yes! The socializers and visitors will be able to play for a one time $10 payment! According to some rumors by Robin they should be able to play if you buy them a $10 gift!.

L$ won't lose value! They will gain value. Object prices are no longer determined by prim rez and tax costs! L$ can be used for land cap and paying monthly charges, uploading sounds and images, buying land in game (the RL$ you pay is to set a cap! It does not give you that land, you still have to find a way to acquire it in world).

Prim hogging will be impossible, and the prim cap / server is going up. The restricting factor on sim prim limits has been frames per second, and a key focus of 1.2 has been the improvement of fps. Especially in high avatar count situations - which means of course that the avatar limit will also be going up!

No more taxes. Your account is now a factor of:
Land Cap
Land You Own

Wow! Simple! You want to raise your cap, go to the website and pay L$ or RL$. (Or more likely set it higher, confirm you really want to, then get billed at the end of the month).

If you make a very popular place (remember, all your friends can play for only a one time $10 payment!) then you will get RL$ back! As credit or check (at least this first one was).

To anyone who thinks that removing the tax system removes the incentive to build nice builds, think again. Real $$ is a big thing, and used as a double edged sword. It costs real $ to buy the land for big projects, which means they have to care about it, and although it may not be the most pleasing to you it will be important to someone in a very real way. If it is the most pleasing to you, and you spend time there, then they will get paid! If that isn't incentive to build good builds I don't know what is. Combine that with the fact that ratings will still have an effect on how much L$ they get, which will still have use. As for trash.... with prim limits per plot, how many people are gonna squander that by not keeping their place clean??

Woot! I got a mention in another post. I am no longer exceedingly rich! Double Woot! I gave away Omega Games (which probably lost me a lot of RW$$ :/) and DarkWood. Very soon I will be 'landless'! However, I no longer have to completely leave SL! Even though I won't have land, I will have more access to SL than I thought I would. :)

Overall I am very excited about 1.2 . It is a drastic move that I think is necessary for the future growth of SL, and I'm glad they realized it and made it. I think the economy as it was had hit a cap or was hitting it, a point where more users hurt the system, more resources hurt the system and other things. The new system solves so many people's complaints at once it is amazing. There will of course be some people who complain. They could say they were giving out $1,000L to every player and many people would complain, they could announce any change and many people would complain.

I am on an emotional roller coaster. I want to like the changes, but too many questions come up. I really want to wear a happy face and get out there and help mentor newbies like I always have, but my concerns are nagging at me too strongly to enjoy things right now. I really wish I could shake feeling like this, its not pleasant.

One thing is certain, a lot of cool builds are going to go away next month, the world is about to drastically change. I am afraid less prims in builds will equal a blander world. Many will be limited to their 512m, 1024m, and 4096m prims and I'm just worried.

We will all have a fair share based on what we are able to spend, but what are the long term costs going to be? Still waiting and hoping it all goes well.

I gotta keep saying this... there was no such thing as prim hogging. If people were living beyond their means by having more resources than they could pay tax on they were a problem that took care of itself. If they weren't living beyond their means, then they EARNED the prims they were using fair and square under the old rules. Don't confuse someone being industrious and successful for selfishness. It wasn't selfish. Access to more resources was the REWARD for success.

And it still is. The successful people will:
- Get RW$ money for their high dwell
- Be able to reduce their monthly costs with L$
- Be able to raise their land cap with L$ (and thus their prim count).

Not for 1.2 but in the 'near' future, prim exchange is also planned so that you may trade prim counts within your sim.

What won't be possible is for people to own a disproportionate amount of prims to land. Yes that is a feature of the current system, you can decide where your money goes - prims or land? Lots of space or lots of stuff or both if you can afford it. The new system ties the two together. Prim alotment matches land allotment on a per plot level instead of a per sim level, which prevents any 3rd parties from effecting your ability to build. I think the trade off is worth it.

Actually that is slightly innacurate, from what I gather prim allotment will be per user / per sim. Slightly different than per plot. If you have 1 plot that can have 100 prims, and another than can have 200 - then you can put all 300 prims on the first plot if you wish.... I think. :D

Yep, that's how I understand it too :) I'm sold that 1.2 is a good thing, and will bring SL closer to its original intent. It's just that term that bugs me because it implies a kind of screw your neighbor mindset which never really existed (except in rare instances). The tax system didn't succeed at balancing resources as well as was hoped. People with a lot of resources weren't grinding up noobs in their basements and forming them into prim shapes, hehe.

i guess hogging isn't a nice word but its sort of a 'natural' one.. its not that they were breaking the rules.. its that the rules were kinda of broken and they would go with it (prim bankers could be another way to describe it i guess a little less negatively)

But say all the coffee in america was bought by bill gates tomorrow and he hoarded in a giant basement at microsoft... he *could* do it, he has MORE than enogh money/resources but i think you'd have a HUGE number of mightily cranky caffeine addicts knockin on his front door, with justifyable grievance

its just an artifact of the system that ensured every .01x.01x.5 prim reed you added to your wicker 4 chair set was four less walls yer neighbor could have for *their* home

and to that i say,

thank you LL, thank you SOOOOOO much

Ok can anyone tell me what will I do with my linden bucks in v1.2?
I'm not planning on going above the 1/16th cap on lifers.
I never really buy anything. I wont have the $3500 cap either.
So my bonus and stipend just keeps pouring in, which is insane. If it's the same amount it is today or even half of it most people will get more money for free every week than they get from their business.
I'm sure I'm not the only person with this kind of mindset so what will happen when all these huge amounts of L$ are rotting away unused?
Less bonus/stipend for everyone else?
I can just see it now, new people coming into the game and being unable to get any relevant amount of money because the older players are all hoarding it. And we all know how prone noobs are to wasting it all on their first day.

Stipend; a fixed sum of money paid periodically for services or to defray expenses.

Stipend is not an income. If you dont incur expenses, you should not receive a stipend. Your cash balance will not just grow weekly by simply being in world, you will have to find a means to earn income.

Currently, I have a friend who drops into see me from time to time and rarely rezzes anything. She does not receive a stipend.

whatever ya feel like... I was kinda annoyed about that too originally but i had an idea sorta the other day... i could just give it away.. literally

if someone made something really cool or wacky an it had me laughing, why not pay them abit if yer money's not doin much else.

Or you could actually host/fund yer own events or ideas.. setup a contest for people to make somethin ya've always wanted to see in game but couldn't find just right.

Im actually thinkin of doin a $500 a week givaway for weird stuff with little trophies an everything ^.^

Honestly since we don't need the money ourselves nearly as much anymore (especially us lifers' with littleRL funded foreward aspirations) we might's well find cool ways of givin it to people who do want/need it and who do stuff we like

especially stuff that wouldn't ordinarily qualify for bein linden funded (aka disorganized happenings in welcome area, very personal/arbitrary type contests, etc)

i mean i *DO* want to be able to walk into the welcome area an say "in exactly 90 seconds, every purple person in my sight gets $50" just so i could see how many purple people i could get in one picture or other weird kinda stuff that its HARD to do now when all that $$$ is directly tied to yer in world home ambitions

as near as i understand it loki, in 1.2 she *WILL* recieve a stipend every week that she's 'in' game, depending on her 'investment' into the game RL$ wise... no tax to offset, no more 3500 max.. you'll just get free money pretty much and thats whats bothered alot of people.. tho like i said i'm gonna be come an eccentric old coot an fund massive piles of weirdness and love every minute of it ^.^

Actually, we're not recieving stipends anymore, they going to be called "grant" :D . But that's just me being technical.

I think 1.2 will help out a lot. The extra money you have can be used towards charity or something, maybe give some of it to newbies when they first enter or something. Or maybe give it to some really cool projects you see around the world. In addition to the grant you'll get, you'll still get the ratings/dwell/vote bonuses, and you can use that money to help out some newbies or cool builds.

The only concern i have about 1.2 is what is going to happen to Slate. I just moved into there not to long ago, and while i like the ideas of 1.2, i think it will dramatically affect the Slate Community. I know that i am a lifer, and i believe 4 others in the community are lifers, so that's 5/16ths of Slate that we can own. Looks like we'll have to figure out what to do after a while, oh well.

Eggy--please don't think this is a 'lash out post'--but another tiny problem in-game has been a non-functional economy, partly due to the fact that -no one buys anything- and also due to the fact that this results in the hoarding of money. I wouldn't exactly say 1.2 is putting pressure on you to spend your undoubtedly large sum of cash, but at least it distances you from it a little bit so you're more willing to spend or donate with it. Think of charity. :)

Whats the point of me buying anything if I can just make my own?
I have actually gone into stores and built exact copies of what they had for sale in under 5 mintues. I've even toyed with the idea of building a copy of just about everything that's out there and selling it for much less than the original. Call me a griefer and ban me :p
My ideal SL would have no money and everything would be free to copy and you would always be able to modify whatever you owned. Ideally one would be able to see a list of modifications made to a given object or script, along with who had performed them. Even cooler, you would get to see how the object had been changed over time, scrolling back and forth between all the versions.
There would also be no land banning. If you want to be alone dont play multiplayer games.
And llPushObject wouldnt be able to throw you 2000 meters up in the air.
And there would be no sim ratings. And your chat would stay inside the walls of your house at all times.
Oh and no ratings, votes or dwell either. If I wanted to compete I would join a sports team.

Clearly, some people *do* enjoy the competitive aspect, and ideally the system should accommodate both as well as it can.

My own ideal would have both systems side by side, just as commercial software and open source software currently co-exist. If one is clearly superior to the other, the better system will crowd out the worse one. (Hasn't happend yet.)

If you want to see an Open Source movement within SL, with a system-enforceable CopyLeft, I'm all for it. If you want to *impose* the CopyLeft on everyone, that's another matter. (I feel the same way about the Free Software / Open Source movements in real life.)

Version control! I'd *love* to have that! I bet that someday we will have that or something like it, once the Lindens have worked far enough down their "to do" list.

Hey Lib, please excuse my europeon-ness, who the heck is sam walton :)
LL is moving on to embrace creative commons type licenses... I dont know when, but neither do I care. Its just a game for gods sake. I couldnt care less if I own the copyright on what I build or not. I'm not here to license anything. I'm here to have fun. It's a game isnt it? We're all supposed to be here to have fun. In fact, we are PAYING so that we can be here having fun. If you need to ask money for something its because you are WORKING instead of PLAYING... and this is a game folks. We're here to have fun. Not work. mmkay? :)
The very first thing that comes to my mind when I build something cool is to go around the world showing off to everyone what a l33t bu1ld3r I am :D
And I give everyone who cares a copy. Why shouldnt I? I really dont understand these people who come in the forums offering $800 for a couple lines of SetPos and other basic crap. I've spent half my life repairing other peoples computers for free and I'm not complaining about it. If I dont want to do something, no amount of money will persuade me either.
Being kind to others is its own reward.
