how come, with the new telehubs, the maps were not updated? i checked the telehub in stillman and the map was still old.. not even showing the 2 linden land sims.

lindens... are you planning to update it soon?

Woops, good point! Many of the in-world content maps (like on the hubs, etc) are out of date. We'll get those fixed.

But the new map in the client (Map button) is much better and now live (1 day delay).

Check out the 'land to buy' layer, etc. It is really really cool.

Yeah, I saw the land to buy thing; that was fairly awesome.

Allow me to hijack this thread a bit, since it seems the problem has come to a hasty resolution...

It is my belief that the "see the hot places" filter on the map is sort of a benefit enough WITHOUT dwell. People go to the hot places, and going to hot places makes the owner of those places money, whether it be through trinkets, donations, advertising, games, or any other thing the owner can come up with. Why have dwell when you can have such reputation?

The hot places layer is actually compiled directly from the dwell information nightly.

It is a good way to get a feel for it - zoom in on your land, etc, and see how it evolves over next few days.

Well, actually what I was saying was that having a popular place, and the popularity of it showing on the map, draws traffic to the place. Traffic is liable to buy things at the location, or look at ads put there. So dwell may give people too much if there place has a lot of people. I know that sounds strange, but it's going to be my official prediction for now :)

I see what you mean - sorry! That was a much deeper thought...

Yes this is a fascinating and very good point - visibility into the traffic gives positive feedback which tends to reinforce existing patterns. We've thought about this lots - you want to reinforce finding things but not to the point where the coolest few things tend to capture all the traffic (think Britney Spears and MTV).

So this will be an interesting experiment!

But, in a sense, the idea of PAYING for dwell (as opposed to simply reporting it) is a separate and fascinating issue. It basically raises from zero the minimal 'value' of having someone stop by your house. In essense it is like saying...

"OK, all you people who live in San Francisco: Every week everyone is gonna throw $1 into a pool. And we are going to then give that money out to clubs, restaurants, etc, based on observed traffic."

So the upside is people at those places are gonna be nicer, because you give money just by going there. The downside is maybe you don't want to put money into the kitty. It's a really interesting issue.

I'm beginning to thoroughly enjoy the new maps, and all the functions available within them. It's just taking some getting used to, that's all.

Soon, I'll be able to hold SL Basics with confidence! ;) It's fun learning a whole new system...

Update:

Later last night, the maps on the Stillman telehub were updated. BTW, I am officially changing my opinion of the new maps... while I miss the drop downs on the 'old' mini-maps, the new large map has LOTS of useful info...

In a perfect <Second>World, we'd have both. Lindens?? Whaddya say?

Nonono, Juro. :) The new one is fine.
All you have to do is click on the minimap, which brings up the megamap. Then, right at the top right, the scroll down list of calling cards is right there. Then, you can go as far as clicking on the person's location, teleporting as close as you can, and then fly to the person while the map is still up (if you wanted).
There's one or two more clickies, but once habit takes over, the new megamap minimap concept will be a godsend. :D

I also discovered something neat: click on the map in either version and it makes a red dot. What's this, you ask? It's the landmark beacon! So you don't have to HAVE a landmark for that spot.

And once you arrive at your destination, you can kill the beacon by flying through it.

Nice touch!

I like it, with all the flying i do, it actually shortens my travel time, and heck it's free.
