My small business failure showed my explicitly that being nice and helpful, and allowing deadbeats to "pay when they can", and trying to put together an honest quote for someone instead of ganking them...earns you nothing in the long run. Cold bloodied is the only way to operate if you wanna make a profit.

It does earn you respect, not from the asshats that rip you off (they don't even respect themselves), but honest people will respect that you need to make a living and respect you for dealing with them in a forthright manner.
Not to mention self respect.
Respect may not make the house payment but eventually your good name will become a contributor to it. And when it's all said and done, your not remembered in life for how much you had but for what kind of you were.
Hang in there - honest people are a treasure.
