By "indie" do you mean someone who doesn't join a group? If that is what you mean, then my answer is nothing. Joining a group, eventually, may be a good idea. It will allow you to defer costs, you'll network with like-minded people, and have help with larger projects; don't think I'm trying to say I dislike groups. However, unless (I forgot to say "unless" here.) you can offer something to that group -- scripting, building, textures, etc. -- you are just helping them pay taxes. That's my opinion anyway... Assuming I understood what "indie" meant. :)

You don't need to join a group. Aside from the newer financial benefits for group owned land/builds/themed communities/etc, there is no reason to join a group. Don't feel pressured, most groups are little more than chat channels.
