I created this Greasemonkey userscript to solve a personal pet-peeve of mine, and thought some other people with the necessary platform may get some use out of it.

First, the annoyance. You know those links on the upper right of every post? The ones that say "#1" and will link directly to a post. Well, they have a URL constructed in such a way as it shows that post and only that post. Fair enough, but if you're handing a link to someone they will probably want the context of the entire thread.

So I wrote a Greasemonkey userscript to fix this. Greasemonkey is a Firefox addon that allows you to load Javascript for certain pages, to change behaviors or whatever.

If you know what I'm talking about, the userscript is here.

If you don't, here's some easy steps.

1. Use Firefox.
2. Install the Greasemonkey extension.
3. Restart Firefox.
4. Load the userscript from this link
5. While viewing the script, click Tools > Install User Script...
6. Confirm and navigate to a thread page.

For the tekki wiki scripterati minded:

This userscript makes an XPATH query to grab all of the "#X" post links. Then for each one that uses the showpost.php?p=NNN&postcount=X URL it massages that into the showthread.php?p=NNN#postNNN form. This second form will show the entire thread, and focus the browser down to the specified post rather than show just the post without any context.

Edit:

Here's another one that removes the "View Post" link for ignored users, just in case you want to keep from being tempted to read some drivel: script

Install the same as previous one.

As a side note: these should work on any vBulletin forum system. Just add included URLs in the Greasemonkey script manager.

I changed the Ignore script to add a link to the username popup menu, underneath "Add UserName to Your Buddy List", that adds them to your ignore list rather than go through their profile. I'm too lazy to duplicate the styling code there, so you'll have to live with the unhighlighting link.

If anyone has any suggestions or annoyances that could be fixed, would be interesting to hear them.

This one's fun, though less useful I think (unless you use the website events page):

Tringo Filter for secondlife.com/events

Nope, Cienna. You fixed my primary annoyance pretty well. I always end up clicking on the ignored posts out of this morbid curiosity. But why bother? Nothing that the Prime Nuisance says is worth reading. Thanks alot. :D

This is teh hawtness. Excellent work, Cienna.

I've extended the regular expression in the Tringo events page filter a bit to cover more things I never want to see:

CODE
var tringoRegex = /((tr|sl)([-*])?ingo)|(raffle)|(free (money|l\$))|(f r e e)|(m o n e y)|(yard( )?sale)/i;

That makes http://secondlife.com/events somewhat useful again. :)

A little bit of thread necromancy, but someone told me about Trixie a tool for running Greasemonkey userscripts in IE. As I don't use IE myself, if anyone tries these and they don't work in Trixie just let me know.

Cienna,

Thank you, as someone who uses both browsers, it is nice to be able to use some greasemonkey scripts in IE.
