Appologies if this has been posted already, but there's a story on BBC News Online about the ongoing private investigation/spying controversy. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4432019.stmSL must really be hitting the bigtime (or LL have got some good PR people working for them now). Mentions in Edge magazine are all well and good, but this story on BBC News Online will be read by thousands of times more people than will ever see a copy of Edge.

SL has always had good media coverage, what with the embedded reporters and everything.
Heck, I and a whole bunch of other people came to SL in September of 2003 after reading about it in a Wired article.

Yes this is very good coverage for SL The BBC news site is one of the most popular web sites in the UK (if not the most popular).

Interesting read and cool screen shots. As for the PI controversy, it's probably an overblown concern. I am curious how the ToS applies in such cases, though.

Interesting article, though they got one crucial fact wrong: Markie McDonald and Bruno Buckenburger ARE SL "detectives." The article paints the avs as two examples of people who have used the services of SL "detectives." Leave it to the media to play up the most sordid aspects of anything, eh? Oh, well, the article still features a great shot of Lordfly's original Grignano Towers build. And, I suppose any publicity is good for business.

The funny thing about the honey trap is a lot of men are hiring these organisations to set up a honey trap for themselves.
That way when they're out they're always getting hit on by the ladies.
Heh heh.. ah what a tangled web we weave.

No Torley?
04-11-2005 16:28
Why wasn't Torley in this article? I mean, it would be a perfect addition to the brief mention that someone might not be the sex in RL that they are in SL. Not to mention that Torley is also a bona fide celebrity in SL.
There really ought to be a new word invented for "celebrity for SL."
SLicon?! That actually sounds kind of naughty.

Awwwwww thanks Chance, but really, it's okay. Actually I should point out that I likely would not be in SL were it not for Hamlet's NWN. Funny thing because one of the primary reasons why I'm here is to praise others -- and of course, Hamlet's already done a nice article on Jadey + Torley. We, however, are not adulterers. LOL.

*Torlop hops off* Haha... Yes. I know you aren't adulterers, but you are metasexual. Did I just coin a new term?

If that just doesn't take the prize, I really do not know what does... just goes to show, the world cares more for icing than cake. So meh... let them eat cake.
(Why does it not surprise me that given the chance to talk about the very real issues of privacy and consumer rights, the BBC (and Hamlet) choose instead to talk about how glamorous it is to mislead and spy on others?)

More free publicity...
04-15-2005 08:03
Thought you would like to know.. The Times of London are also doing a thing in this weekends papers (I think its the weekend) about sex and SL and how relationships work.. and why pay for a Private Investigator in a virtual world....
p.s. I think we should have a SL walk of fame and I vote for Torley as first star.. just after what I have seen ...

Yep. I forwarded the article to some non-SL friends (and my dad). Seemed like an interesting way to show what a complex, vibrant world SL was. Only afterwards I thought: What did I just do? Here I spend all my time in SL building and wandering solo, but thanks to that article they'll think I'm cavorting in an online X-rated romper room.
