DJs VS. On-Air Personalities

I've always called myself a DJ until another thread got me thinking. Am I really a DJ or am I an on-air personality?

I am most definitely not a DJ by any true DJ's standards. Being a DJ would imply that I mix music. That I blend tunes to tell a story. That I do more than play MP3s for a set.

I do not really do any of those things. What I DO is entertain a crowd on any given night, during any given show. I play to the crowd, I joke, tease, laugh and occassionally even get nakie with the people I'm playing for/with and in between all this I play music. Sometimes a set playlist, sometimes requests, sometimes themed but always entertaining.

To the true DJs of SL and the whole world over, I salute you. To the On-air entertainers, I salute you as well. It takes all kinds of talent to do what we do which is play the music we want to, make the people dance and ultimately, walk away from a set satisfied that we pleased the people.

Whether you're a DJ or an entertainer...

YOU RAWK!

You know what, screw the music already, let's have some decent radio shows :)
Do something controversial. Get Alby and Darko screaming at each other on air ;)
Or, a small skit. Make people laugh.
Charge people for sending love messages on air to each other.
This is SL, we are supposed to be creative :)

Interesting Distinction...

Trin, you KNOW I love your shows, and you certainly ARE a personality, on or off air, entertaining N lovely! :D

I would have to guess that most of the time, I'd fall in the more classic DJ category by your description (which I think is dead-on).

I am wondering what prompted the thread?

I know that the more variety present in the DJ buffet, the better I think it is for all of us, DJ's and audience alike! Just like anything else, it provides impetus for quality! (or so the theory goes)

I am a DJ, not a radio jock, not a wedding jock, but a true club jock. SL and RL. I don't get on the mic because that is what MC's are for. I let the music speak for me if there is no MC around. I use true club medium. 12" vinyl records, 1200's, TTm56, headphones and monitors. No mp3 wannabe for me.

It was a thread on special events that got me thinking it, Madame.

I love you to death, lady blue. You ARE a DJ of the highest quality. :) *smooches*

If you read my original post, it's basically paying hommage to both DJs and radio/wedding jocks/MCs everywhere. Whatever your choice, whether spinning or playing MP3s, it's all good. :)

I don't play techno, but I bet people that don't know will assume its techno. RL peeps always call it techno.

YEAH!!!

"Techno" is such a blanket term for TECHNOlogically-based music... it's an umbrella of umbrellas... 300 subgenres and counting, LOL... even with "Filtered House", you're gonna get French and Italian varieties, plus different angles of funk and even "Filtered Tech-House with a subcomponent of Ambient Breakbeat Acid Jazz". My oh my... flashbacks. :)

Semi-jesting aside...

I've just found "DJ", like "Techno", to be a flexible and amorphous term. I like Trin and what she does, and she does make me smile -- both with her av and her on-air personality. Paradigms shift, but I hope the laughter will roll on.

Trin, more Kraftwerk please... play "Computer World" for once... PLEASE... :D *grins*

I hope you enjoyed my Kraftwerk event Torley -although I appreciate that it was much more focused on their early stuff.

However there will be more Kraftwerk coming up I promise...

Oh - fwiw I'm a DJ not a bubbly personality - not that there is anything wrong with being a bubbly personality - my style is to let the music speak.

My style was "station name, time, sponsor live read, bit from X-Trax, time again, songs coming up, competition, phone number, station name again, next song". :D

It's not so much yelling as squeels of disgust. :p
