down at the bottom of the main forum page i saw "Threads: 14,400, Posts: 102,558, Members: 114,755". i didn't have to register special for the forums, it signed me up automatically with my account. so does that mean there are 114,755 people with current sl accounts? i would assume if you cancel it revokes your forum priveleges... can people sign up for the forum without having an sl account?

Multiple accounts could account for some of the discrepency in the numbers. Cath

Right, that would be more accurate, I believe Banned accounts still have limited access to the forums as well. It would be interisting to see *ACTIVE* users, but LL seems to be keeping statistics on that in the "vague" catagory. Could we get active user accounts added into the economy statistics?

The most accurate estimate of the playerbase I've seen was 15,000 a couple of months ago. I'd estimate that there are around 20,000 accounts now.

I wonder if each "member" is really an IP address, or if it includes guests just browsing?

From: Zuzi Martinez so maybe that's more like 114,755 people have ever signed up. Yeah, that's what that figure represents.

I can't remember the precise details, but you could do capture-recapture as an attempt to determine the actively playing population, although it would reflect active people at that time of day I guess...
It is a sound biological technique and if you did a search by several surnames say and saw the recapture rates you could get a reasonable estimate. I'm not sure what time of day would be best, maybe 4-6pm game time on a Saturday - you would probably get a fair range of folks from all parts of the globe that way.
