I found this thread very interesting. Since using Second Life, I've found myself feeling more and more limited by the standard 2-d desktop interface on my computer. The whole desktop metaphor seems more and more restricted to me. I'm getting spoiled by the 3-d immersive environment of SL. I'm curious if anyone here has experimented with different desktop interfaces. For me, the holy grail would have to be Sun's Looking Glass interface. But I've been using Spacial Research's Spaces interface for Windows for a couple months now, and I've found it very liberating. No, it's not perfect, but it seems to let me organize things on my desktop and in my mind much better than before. Anyone else trying anything like this?

As an aside, in Spacial Research's interface, I found the default interface to be somewhat lacking. If you right-click on the background, click "Properties" and then select under Workspaces the "Panorama" interface, you'll find an interface with a nice background panoramic image as well as "smart walls" (when you minimize web pages, they automatically go to the "Internet" wall.) I find this setting much better than the default workspace. I think having a real-world image in the background as a reference helps alot with spacial memory.

Very cool John. And yes... I find myself regularly trying to zoom around something on the desktop only to be denied!

Hmm, that would be really fascinating. I'd get one! It would up the "fun" factor definitely.

I've been advocating for years, at my job, that desktop software needs to redesign UI to fit in a 3d model. My bosses always looked at me like Im nuts. Well, I might be nuts but I still think 3d UI is the way to go.

But you would need a 3d interface as well. Ie, not a mouse. Otherwise it's a 2d interface made to LOOK like a 3d one. There's still only one plane of interaction, and that's the x/y coords of your mouse pointer.
Wake me up when they add the z axis.
