Prereq:
Comcast had a national outage tonight. Lasted about 6 hours.
this is my livechat with them about 5 min ago
Kyle > Thank you for contacting Comcast, my name is Kyle. How can I help you?. Tom> heya kyle Tom> what happened tonight? Kyle > Unfortunately, you would have to be more specific. Tom> er....comcast had a national outage tonight eh? can you provide any insight? Kyle > I am sorry that you were experiencing difficulties with your connection , however, I should be able to advise you with that. Kyle > One moment while I access your account information please. Kyle > And just to confirm, I am speaking with Tom ?. Tom> indeed Kyle > Thank you. Kyle > Comcast earlier had an issue with the DNS servers, causing members to only be able to browse by IP address. This has since been resolved Tom. Kyle > And is there anything else I can assist you with today ?. Tom> kyle, all things aside, you sound like a bot Kyle > I am sorry that you feel that way, actually I am not. Tom> your issue wasn't with DNS, I had trouble hitting things by their IP as well Kyle > And are you experiencing these issues now?. Tom> no, everything seems to be fine now. Kyle > And is there anything else I can assist you with today, Tom ?. Tom> Will I be getting a credit for today's outage? Kyle > Comcast does provide credits for outages that last 24 hours or longer. Kyle > Did you experience the outage for that timeframe, Tom?. Tom> Comcast has provided credits for outages on my cable television service that did not last 24 hours. Why is this different?> Kyle > Unfortunately, I do not know the policies of the Comcast cable television service, as this is Comcast Internet services, however we provide outage credits for network outages of 24 hours or longer. I do apologise for any inconvienences this may cause. Tom> Can you provide me with a better explanation as to what actually went wrong? It didn't appear to be a DNS issue. Tom> I couldn't reach you DNS server yes Tom> but I could reach everything over att.net Tom> looked more like a routing issue to me Kyle > Actually, is was a network wide DNS issue, and was resolved previously this evening by our network technicians. Unfortunately, more information on that would not be available. Tom> so did your dns servers go down? Kyle > That is correct, as previously advised. Tom> funny...I was able to ping them by IP Kyle > Yes, as IP has no effect on DNS. Kyle > And is there anything else I can assist you with today, Tom ?. Tom> how would a dead DNS server be reachable by IP, but not for DNS? Kyle > Unfortunately, I do not have that information, as I was not available to diagnose the DNS server issue. Kyle > However the situation has been corrected, and you are able to connect correctly, are you not Tom?. Tom> all I'm looking for Kyle is a real answer as to what todays problems were, not to place blame. Is there someone you could put me in contact with? Kyle > Unfortunately, specifics on the issue are unavailable, Tom. Tom> don't ask don't tell eh Kyle? Kyle > However, if you do have difficulties conencting again, please do not hesitate to contact us directly so that we can troubleshoot the situation with you. Kyle > And if there are no further issues, then thank you for contacting Comcast, have a good morning!.

Ah, that explains the outage I had. I actually was experiencing problems yesterday morning... it was longer than 6 hours... at least 10.
On the bright side, that's only the second outage I've experienced with comcast in a year, and both less than a day. My last cable company went out at least monthly.

DNS is a service that runs under a number of OSs on a box. It is accurate that you could very well ping the box and DNS not be working.

Actually, Kyle seemed alot more on the ball than many of the Support people I talk to on a daily basis. I'm sure they are given a relatively strict script of do's and don'ts.
As much as I don't like Comcast's pricing, I have to say their cable Internet service has been extremely reliable in my little corner of the world.
I think I've only experienced 3 outages in past year, with two of them being corrected within an hour or 2.

Help the economy some, and stop being so damn useless you stupid bucket of bolts! R2 is 1,000 times more useful than your tin man ass, and he's shaped like a salt and pepper shaker FFS!

I hate Comcast. I was so happy to get away from them.
Having said that I don't understand the intent of your post. Was it to show your superiority over a first level support technician who probably will never know what truly happened? Are you indicting the entire company because you found someone who did not know what he was talking about?
Seems like you are being a tad arrogant and enjoying showing off to others on this board. Makes one wonder what inadequacies you are hiding.

Thanks for the info. We thought it was just us! Sounds like your tech was in India, or some other place where they'd have learned British spellings. (Note that the tech wrote "apologise" instead of the American "apologize" in the chat log.)
