A Question & A Dilemma about selling Land

Night before last at 1:00 AM Eastern a good friend of mine was getting ready set his newbie 512M plot of land to sell as he wanted to buy a larger piece of land.

Instead of checking the Sell Box he accidentally checked the Release Land box. (I think that it's possible that he did not understand the difference).

In any case - in less than 10 seconds, someone swooped in and grabbed the land and in less than 5 minutes had all the land divided into 16M parcels. He IM'd them about his mistake but was just ignored. He did not know to IM a Linden and I was not online at the time to help him.

My question is: Is there anyway he can get compensated for his lost land by the Lindens?

Can anyone recommend a proper course of action for a situation like this?

Does anyone know if Lindens have considered this to be a problem because new people are unaware of the consequences of releasing the land?

Now I'm wondering how many other newbies out there have made this mistake and learned the hard way - by losing their land.

IM a Linden right away and you'll get that land back. Taking the land like that and setting it up into 16m parcelst to sell is a bad thing and the Lindens don't seem to like it either

How does Release Land work, anyway?

I've never had the opportunity or desire to try it for myself, though I have nightmares of accidentally clicking it in some lag-induced hell only to have one of those soulless demons swoop down and steal it from me while I am in my avie coma, invisible yet conscious . . .

Is there a confirmation dialog box or does the land just get released? I haven't stumbled across that answer in any SL documentation.

He needs to abuse report the person who did this and then eMail LL with the details.

I've been involved as Live Help with land-fly-by rip offs and griefings in real time and it is very important to stay online and get send a help request to Linden-on-duty and Live Help.

Not sure what can be done if he does not have any of the conversation logs, but I'd say he should still report it to LL.

Thanks for all the recommendations - I told him to immediately to report it - but I think that he may only have emailed them. I will recommend that he abuse report it tonight - I will also point him to this thread.

what merwan said. but don't expect much from ll. the world's too big for hand holding and they won't let us police ourselves.

for example, you can't post their name here. we'd get in trouble for mass rating them anyway. they'd file abuse reports and you, at least, would be suspended. the simple fact is that such griefing is accomodated by the system unless a linden happens to be free and sympathetic at the time.

Rose here is the thread from the Mentors Group Forum where Land Stealing was talked about in context of a real time inWorld incident that happened on 9/3.

Hope this helps add information to the community about how important it is to handle these crimes immediately.

They should consider a means of not making 'release land' so easy to do. I have been close to making the fatal mistake a couple of ocassions.

What exactly happens when land gets released? Does it go back to being Linden property? How can someone just pick it up? Scary thought. I better quit drinking while playing.

When land is released, it becomes public land. With 'View Property Owners' on, it has no color - it's not red, yellow, purple, green or blue, it's just the color of whatever land texture it has.

You can right click on it, choose About Land and buy it for $1/m2. You have to buy it in 16m2 chunks (I've been told there are ways of selecting larger areas to buy at once, but I've tried everything and it doesn't work for me).

I've only seen public land twice in over 4 months of playing. Once when someone told me they were about to release it, and did so before I could respond. The other when I was checking on some land I just got at auction, and noticed the neighboring lot had gone public for reasons unknown (most likely released by the auction winner, but WHY??!!)

It's darned rare, and lasts hardly any time at all, as the original post indicates. I was lucky enough to pick up the neighboring public lot uninterrupted, thanks to no land scanners in a brand new sim, no fly-bys and ten minutes of wearing out my mouse hand!
