Been 'playing' for a few days (if you can call flying around playing) and really am at a loss for things to do.
Not got enough cash to make anything much or buy any land as far as I can tell.
Not really good at making items, tho I guess I could try.
Seems a bit to laggy to make fighting worthwhile..
So what to do? Wander this dali-esque shopping center for days and days? Join some of the many production teams all trying to sell to each other?
Hmm. I'm kinda trying to find a goal. Any ideas?
I kinda feel like being a bad dangerous Pirate type. But not even sure I can do that really (script -click to go home traps asside.. )

The goal of SL is to actually find your own goals.
Of the top if my head, if you are a pirate you might want to try to build your own schooner or something to sail around in.
Edit: Oh I see you say you arent good at building stuff - I think no one was when they started. You can play around and see if you like figuring it out

Tricky to do without much cash.
SL is very very hard on the newby. There's not really any indication of anything to do which doesn't involve reading 20 page manuals.
And if I built this schooner, where would I sail? Around the skinny bits of some of the land where there's a slither of ocean? Hmm :/

Pirate Cotton you could make it a flying schooner and sail in the skies above each sim JV And also that money will last you a while, 3,500 = 350 prims, which i bet could make a full schooner, even if not then next week you will get at least 1,000 more plus your bonus, and yoiu can continue building. This welfare system we have sucks, but it works

Also, go to events, meet peopla, say hi. Trade calling cards, and don't forget to rate people you see and meet who stand out to you. If I think someone has a good look, or they're nice, polite people, or doing their job well (i.e. the Mentors) bingo, I rate them. If I like what they built, I rate them. You're a lot more likely to get rated positively if you rate others, and that raises your stripend.
As far as a 'role' in SL, you very well may find a prefect niche almost by accident. You'll turn a corner and BAM, find a perfect place and setting for a pirate ship. This game is different in that there are no niches pre-designed, you need to carve your own. Don't get discoureged if it doesn't appear right away, took me over a month to be more than a shopper.

talking to people is a big plus. When I first came to SL after prelude A few people started to say hi and someone gave me a cool shirt. I still wear it. Also ask questions I have learn so much in the few days that I have been on line. Also check out the calander. There is a grand opening of a store EMP I think. Friday night at 8:30.

Attend events! This is the best way to meet people and get established. Think of SecondLife less as a game and more as a community (with games to be found)

Also, building gets easier the more you do it...my Tower in Mocha for example, has been through no less than five different forms over the last 4 days alone. My wife's home (one of the most un-technically inclined people I know personally) next door is shaping up nicely, considering that two days ago she couldn't even create a hollow box.
If you do get your ship off the ground, so to speak, I'll gladly sign on.

I made most of the hull of a nice old tall ship last night. Very tricky. The end sections in particular are hard due to the complex curves.
