Nice improvement in client frame rates

With 24 hours of operating data, the 1.5.6 release seems to have improved average frame rates by about 12%. Hopefully many are enjoying this. We track the reported frame rates of the client software, so we can carefully analyze what everyone is seeing (at least on average).

We made improvements in particular to the performance of the 3D renderer under cases where avatars have a large number of attachments.

Bragging spreadsheet attached (which also shows how frame rate varies over the course of a day, for the so interested).

Woo!

Now you just need to get Sim performance equal across the board, and you're set for life! :p

OpenOffice, which is free, can open Excel files.

If you are on Windows, you can also download this for free:

Yeah, now all we need is a good caching solution and we're set!

Dont mean to rain on your parade here, but an increase of 12% means that you go from 10 FPS to 11.2 FPS - w00t :)

OpenOffice

They have a nice freeware app that does just about everything you'd want MS-Office to do, including reading and display .xls files.

I take this into great consideration. I am running on a 533 MHz and the load time is sooo much quicker before the login screen. It used to take about 45 seconds, now it only take 10 seconds. Much improved.

When can we see this ported to the palm? hehe jk

Thanks Philip :D

Also FYI excel documents can be opened in FrontPage 2000 you just need to update using disc. 1.

W00t!

"Rebuild" and "RenderGeom" are the slowest things I see when I hit alt-2. (I only see rebuild when my view goes from not many objects to a lot of objects...)

Anything I can do to speed those up?

I notice a definite difference. I'm no longer leaving my attachments at the Telehub.

This thread's about client FPS, unfortunately.

Sim FPS is the same for everyone in that sim, as it's a measure of simulator performance and doesn't have anything to do with the client. The reason your sim's FPS has dropped is likely because it was assigned a slower server. While all resident-populated sims run on their own computer, each with P4 CPUs, some of them are substantially better. The higher the sim number, (look for the server address in Help > About) the newer and better the sim hardware is.

Also, remember that sim performance tends not to be terribly noticable, aside from the actual numbers. Bellow 100fps, however, things start to feel pretty sluggish. Above that, it's much more difficult to tell just on "feel" alone.

Really? I left attachments left, right and center when teleporting yesterday. That seemed no better.
