EMAIL SPAM - help me kill these people painfully!

Until a few months ago I was basically spam free and now every day I have been getting WEIRD spam emails. They're not even "good" spam! It's like whoever wrote them was on crack! Most of them are entirely gibberish!

The basically have a subject line with some random letters and random words, and then either random letters or random words in the message. Sometimes with broken image links or "attempted" html links.

I checked the source for some of them and nothing matches up, but they are SO similar that it's OBVIOUS that it's from the same basic source.

I've been using this product for about a year now. For less than $30 it is fantastic. Many configuration options if you like to play with things. But very complete as it installs if you want to never give it attention. Updates come down automatically.

Garoad, they put in lots of words so that if you have filters that allow certain content, the spam gets through. They misspell certain words that are likely to appear in a "filter out" list. Also, if you look at html source, you will see that they break up certain words with null tags, ie: vi<aldsofiu>agr<lajfdk>a. This prevents spam filters from recognizing viagra, etc.

Unloadable images usually is a sneaky way to verify that the email is being received. Each email has a different name for the image. When your browser attempt to open the image, their web server notes the request (for a non-existant graphic file) and matches it up to the email address. So they get you even if you don't click anything on the page.

I use Spam Bully as a MS Outlook plugin for spam relief. It has some heuristics and doesn't rely on whitelists and blacklists, or on response systems. I've been pretty happy with it, and it is reasonably priced.

Just in case anyone out there doesn't already know: NEVER click the "don't send me any more" links. That only lets someone know that their email got through to you.

I use pine to read my email, so they never know if it's being opened via the image loading gag. they do know it's being received, though.

oddly enough, I get very little spam on my own domain probably because a) not very many folks know about it; b) I run rather anal server rules that states that if you can't reverse resolve your name, you are not allowed to send me mail. (aka reverse lookups)

the ones that spam me and manage to make it through usually have their 'net access terminated within 48 hours or so, depending on how lazy I am.

the one account that gets the bulk of the spam messages used to just deliver the mail to the bit bucket (dev/null). I turned that alias off completely after the last upgrade. But they still try.

I guess I'll see about installing one of those plugin programs, I use Outlook Expre$$ so unfortunately those STUPID broken images are basically clicking on the "do not send" link for me...which sucks. Although....couldn't I just use my firewall to block port 80 for Outlook Expre$$ to stop that? Should I only allow OE to use port 25? Any others needed?

Garoad, it's been a while since I used Outlook Express, but can't you set it so that it does not automatically open messages? That way, you can delete messages with the subject "hi", or other suspicious subjects, before they are opened. Also, I don't know how widespread the image exploit is, just that it exists.

Try SpamCop, www.spamcop.net. This site has a very sophisticated way of finding out who the ISPs and mail servers are for spammers -- then they composes mail for you to send to the sysadmins of the domains involved. Since most spammers change accounts constantly I don't know how much good it does but it's the only thing I've found that actually addresses the issue and tries to cut off spam at the source.

You may not get any verifiable results, but you'll feel much better afterwards!
