I know this has been said before, but it is worth refreshing memories.

/rant on

Please don't spot a green dot on your mini-map, fly to it, notice there is nobody at ground level, strap on your jetpack, fly straight up, find somebody sitting there obviously working on something, and try to start a conversation. And definitely don't start poking at things. Scripters often don't put owner checks into touchable objects while they are developing. It is just rude. We are hiding out for a reason.

/rant off

Happens all the time in public sandboxes. So I moved to private sandboxes. Just happened again...

Oh yeah, and this isn't limited to sandboxes, either. Happens on sky platforms on private parcels, as well.

IMO, proper etiquette would be to first IM the individual to find out if they are free to chat.

I feel your pain. I either work on a platform or semi-underground. There are maybe 4 people allowed to track me down when I am working. Usually I don't want to be disturbed mainly because I am in and out of the game and working in other programs so its really not conduicive to having a conversation.

This is an excellent argument for the Lindens modifying our green dot status so we just don't show up on the map if we are set to "busy" mode. I have had this happen many, times, too, while in-world trying to upload and adjust clothing. I'm constantly afraid that somebody will think I'm being rude to them by not answering their questions or talking to them when I'm really just in the process of flipping back and forth between SL and Photoshop.

If we do this we become invisible. I'm not for this at all.

Put yourselves on busy. Tell the person you are busy, put owner checks on your scripts or disable them when people come around if you are too lazy to put checks in, if they won't leave you alone file an abuse report.

As for me, feel free to swing by the starship and poke around while I am working. It won't bother me at all & I wont mind. However, I will prolly put you to work testing lol!

The way I look at it, if you go through the trouble of getting to me, you really must have wanted to see me, so c'mon by :-)

Invisibility
01-17-2005 12:13
Actually, I think the idea of invisibility in IM and in the map can be a useful thing. Sometimes there's perhaps a person or two that you don't want to take off your calling cards but wants to IM you about the new shoes they bought every 2 minutes (not that this ever happens to me, but i know a person who knows a person...) Well, having the (i'm not here go away) option for your im list, rather like yahoo messenger, would be a nice option.

does this include...

the odd thing that seems to happen when I'm in my apt. doing whatever, thinking, decorating, chatting, afk in PS or whatever, it's my apt. right? and someone WALKS IN. No "knock knock" or other pleasantries, but just barges in what is clearly NOT a store, but a private residence (w/non-lockable doors, windows big enough to fly through and lord knows we all know how to "sit" our way through a wall). Then they stand there insisting that I entertain them. These are complete strangers.

Feel like pulling a Joe Pesci..."what? Do I amuse you? ..."

sigh

To the original point, I feel guilty sometimes, giving terse replies when working and not too happy when cards, votes and other items pop in demanding action, taking my "hand" from whatever I"m editing. It's terribly disruptive.

Oh, and to the green dot visibility, I'd love to be able to have "degrees" of visibilty or even IM access.

An Inner Circle of folks, the rest of my Calling Cards, the Teeming Masses of random contacts, so maybe 4 settings would be super-cool. One setting for everyone "yes", one for everyong "busy/no", one setting for all calling cards "yes" and a last setting for select calling cards ONLY "yes".

That way say my business partners and I can build or meet in peace or any myriad uses.

Might be too much to ask, but if we don't ask, how will we know?

I've been quite lucky. Noone bugs me when I'm building on my sky platform. Then again I stuck it way the heck up there.

I actually experienced the frustration of company while building yesterday. Usually I don't mind, and will check chat history between prim placements, but I was building underwater, just beneath the surface, and the camera angles, and SL's bad behavior already had me frustrated. So when I had someone whom I very much care about, ask me question after question, and get impatient for my replies, I got a bit peeved and ended up lecturing them. But when I build I can get into the flow of things and forget to check my chat altogether. So if I ever ignore you when I'm building, it's not intentional, merely concentration on my part. I will eventually see what you said ;)

I only get bugged occasionally while working, but it's typically at ground level, so I have no excuse.
