Excessive network traffic when playing SL..

So, after having my computer up for 48 hours, i have:

3,189,336,221 recieved packets
363,703,231 sent packets

3 billion packets in 48 hours is a bit suspicious. The only other programs ive run in those two days which would use bandwidth are Enemy Territory and Halo a few times.

I ran a test, and logged into SL, just sitting in my house. I watched my Local Area Cconnection status box to see just what was going on. I am recieving 14,000 packets every second when playing SecondLife. That is niether good nor normal. This is with NO programs running in the background. At first I thought it was a worm (perhaps Wachita) but multiple scans from safe mode have yielded nothing. When im not playing SecondLife, network traffic is normal.

Every now and again, the intense network will actually lock up my dsl router, requiring a hard reset of the unit.

This is certainly a pretty nasty situation to be dealing with. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what you're considering to be a problem? SL is very bandwidth intense, and uses lots of little UDP packets to provide the continuous updates needed to keep the client in the game. What you're discribing sounds like normal behavior to me.

As I pointed out, the problem occurs when im sitting in my house with nothing loading and NO ONE ELSE in the sim im at.

I've observed the SL traffic under normal loads and it usually doesnt even top 40 packets. I've asked other people what they get normally, and 40 seems to be the common answer. 40,000, therefore is not normal.

3 billion packets in 48 hours just doesnt seem normal.

Go find a traffic analysis program then, such as Ethereal, and capture some traffic. There's no other way to diagnose what you're seeing. You'll need to capture the actual activity, and see what it is and where it's going.

Others in Vin Fiz have noticed the same thing. I haven't measured the traffic myself, but the lag has suddenly become so bad that I can barely move in SL.

Hmm... let's hope the magic of 1.1 clears some of this up!
