I don't see what difference it will make if they do, I mean GOM do, IGE do, will LL offer more competative prices? or will they simply just follow the bandwagon?

Sure, if its business plan is, "Be like There and be completely dead in 6 months."

What a silly question.

The question should be:

Should LL increase the money supply by selling L$ directly to the user?

They have already promised not to do that. Nobody wants them to do it, either, as far as I know.

Selling currency like a bank is something they have proposed doing and would be a good idea as it would increase liquidity and probably encourage people to invest more US$ into the SL economy.

It'll open them up to all sorts of legal crap and responsibilities they don't have all the while they can say 'The Linden Dollar has no monetary value'. It'll never happen. other than perhaps integrating a 3rd party seller into the UI.

For example, if your Linden Dollar balance was to suddenly poof out of existence, as some people's did after the last update, there is absolutely no responsibility on LL to replace it, no matter whether it's your L$50, or Anshe's millions. If LL trade currency themselves, these sort of obligations will become a must, along with opening themselves up for being sued and all sorts.

Should LL sell L$ to stabilize the economy?

The question makes a leap in judgement that selling L$ would stabalize the economy. Please present your reasons for tagging that onto the end of the question so we can better understand why it would have the effect you think it would so we can answer the question either way with more certainty. Otherwise, it is a non-question as it makes an asumption with no reasoning to back it up.

naw just something i was pondering in the middle of the night while i was not sleeping :)
*stretches reaches for a marlboro and a hot cup of joe ;)

Usualy when I am asked my opinion the forums "everything is wonderful we love and back LL 100% doo gooders" jump on my statements. So you will forgive me for being a bit leary these days about answering any question that might leave myself wide open to the usual  .

BUT with that said I have always like you Moopf :) so I will talk with ya :)

Well Moopf to be perfectly honest here I read somewhere in the last few pages of the fourms that LL bought 2.5 million worth of L$ on the GOM. So it got me thinking, why did they do that? Was it to stabilize the economy by trying to drain some Lindens out of it? Or was it because they are considering buying and selling lindens them selves? So there is where the "leap" comes from. If I were privy to any other information I would not be posting it to these forums. Due to the history of these forums. :)

please excuse my typos im an insominac and i dont realy care about spell check this am.

Since LL is the Federal Reserve of SL. LL is in a position where it cannot sell L$, it can only determine how much L$ should exist in the game. Its the players inter-trading of that L$ which gives it value and in turn creates a supply/demand equation that we all enjoy.

If LL started selling L$, then you've incorporated in to SL "unregulated inflation". Anybody who shows up with enough USDs can buy all the L$ they want at a certain price. In the current setup, anybody can show up with USD, but since the total amount of L$ is nearly fixed in the economy, the more 1 person buys, the less that exists floating around in the hands of others. As such, the L$ becomes scarce and causes the valuation to rise. Which in turn continues to make the L$ more and more expensive to the 1 person trying to buy up more and more currency.

Seriously? Do you know which thread that was on? If LL is indeed mass-buying L$ that would be really interesting and I'd like to know about it and why they're doing it. Your idea that it was to drain the economy would appear to be valid, if that is indeed the case, but then why would selling L$ also help to stabalize the economy? If they're draining to stabalize, why would they push it back in? Curiouser and curiouser thought Alice :) I now understand your question more, but would probably have to answer No, as I can't see the point of LL buying currency to stabalize then selling it back to stabalize, unless it happens at a much slower rate over a long period of time.

Hopefully you can remember which thread it was on, if not I'll start hunting to see if I can find it.

You just need to look at the graph. Didn't happen.

If they do trade it will probably be in small amounts.

They also promissed ebay would not be involved

The information we were given about potential eBay involvement is posted in the town hall transcripts last 10/27 and 10/28 under Linden Forums Announcements. There were several questions about this, all of which are worth reading.
As I read it, the key statement from Phil was that LL would not be "collaborating" with eBay, but would be with Mr. Omidyar.

look what happened there. ;)

Wisely or not, LL made a management decision to place auction ads for their sponsored links; they went to what is arguably the most established online auction service around. LL placing 20 fortnightly auction listings with eBay is no more "collaborating" than it is for eBay's 51 million other active accounts.
Using a business service is not the equivilent of business collaboration. I see nothing special to look at in this.

I think one difference is that since they control the supply, they have an unfair advantage over 3rd party sites. I always found it sleazy that There sold currency from the second you popped into the game. I am glad SL never has, and would hate to see that change.

Lets not forget that the programming resources to setup another internal system, to mirror what e-bay does, would take away time from fixing bugs, which is also what everyone wants. Hard to satisfy a lot of requirements if you're 'forbidden' to use established tools.

It was easy to setup (relatively) and is in action faster than LL doing it themselves. I don't see the big deal. But again, I'm guilty of being logical.
