I have an inventory full of gifts.

Some were given out of the joy of giving...

Some were given to teach me how to do things

Some were given simply because i needed them.

Dont feel sorry if you decide to sell something given you.

Buyer beware...... If you want to buy something here... Ask around and youll find people who will give it you free... or who will enjoy the challenge to reproduce something....

Not everyone cares about ownership but more about the friendships made by sharing the SL experience.

Those who want to retain ownership have tools available now to restrict the use of their items.

Every here is built from Prims - Objects and scripts ( code is there)

I think people shoud get paid for there time, effort and textures uploaded but once it is out anyone can recreate items with similar or different Prims and techniques.

I saw a Globe of the Earth, I built one with My own style...should I pay copyright fees to someone.

I wouldn't feel sorry unless you deliberately set out to profit from someoneelses work....

Isnt selling something that was a freebie profiting from someone elses work?

If I saw stuff for sale at a shop that I knew was free I would not buy anything there and I would advise everyone I knew not to buy there either. Its a ripoff of the creator and a ripoff of the people you are selling to. A great way to get a bad rep fast.

Yeah, as a general rule, it's bad form to sell anything you didn't originally create or at least contribute to unless you have talked to the original creator and gotten explicit permission.

You know the Avatar Fuego? It's a free attachment that I gave out, and no biggie. But if I saw someone charging for it, I'd totally flip out like a ninja. Just because a creator decides to give something out for free doesn't mean that she's given up her rights on her intellectual property.

I'm sure you didn't mean anything by it, and in virtual space, some of these little rules can get confusing. But just in case anyone's reading, do try to be extra courteous about others' intellectual property! If SL turns into the kind of world where people generally disregard these courtesies, I think it will hurt us all. ^_-

If you have something like that to say, don't say it.

And about the actual topic. Bam: It's ok, but always always ALWAYS ask the buyer before you do that. For me, it probably wouldn't be a big deal. BUT, that doesn't mean that everyone in SL would think that. It's a learning experience, Bam, no perminent harm done.

Misnomer ...

I agree dont take for free and sell as is...

My point was more that creations in SL feed of each other.

I am given something I like it ...i change it...tweak it ...add to it...

In this process the original creator of what is now just another component gets lost...

That's why we lock what we want to control.

and you are right sell what you have been given and you get a bad rap.

I have already been offered (to buy) items that I later found were part of the original giftbag :
Prince Charming
Groupie Chick
furniture
Because I was a noob i almost got caught...

I bought wings...paid for an AV

Just to find the same things available from others for no cost.

That's why I repeat BUYER BEWARE !

Last point - BAM you were deceived..when you found out the truth you fixed things....

I think you're one of the white hats !!:D

Someone should post a list of objects that come with the newbie account so that newbies can come and see what they can get for free.

Or better yet, maybe set up a place that looks like a store where all the newbie products are on display (or pictures of them on boxes) and they are free to copy.
