In Hanks notes on the 1.5.11 patch update it was stated as follows.

From: someone
- Fixed three exploits whereby no-copy objects could be duplicated.
Thanks go to Evil Fool, Damien Nightshade, and Andrew Linden for
finding them.
.

So with that in mind and the "Percieved Problem" proven as a Problem.

What will be the recourse for all the content creators that were affected by this exploit.

Any recompense?

Or are we still in the mode of accepting the fate of our creations even though this exploit has diluted our quality base of products we offer.

Just curious is all not just for me but for all the others that were affected by the exploit.

Please feel free to offer up any suggestions.

Shadow

Can I have the job of determining who gets what compensation? It sounds dull, but it has built-in job security. Plus I could take breaks to document the process for whoever takes the task over when I retire.

Not being rude Arcadia but to me thats as detrimental as a player run government.

So I appreciate you speaking up but the solution to the issue isnt adding a player to dictate other players rewards for Creativity/Earnings lost. Doing so would be a larger battle front than a player run government.

But alas I guess people being screwed over by bugs is not as much of importance as a political stance on Upskirt pics that are against the TOS ...I give up maybe it is time to pack up shop.

I read Arcadia's response as a couched in dry wit version of "it would be impractical to the point of impossibility to do"...

Or maybe I'm just reading my own thoughts on it into her words.

Not that it would be a bad thing, just... impractical to the point of impossibility.

Agreed. As much as this problem sucks, how can you quantify any reparations to determine how much to pay someone who it happened to? Having had this happen to me, I am happy that they are taking the problem seriously, even if the cork can't be put back in the bottle at this point. It doesn't diminish what happened, and I understand your anger, and even your question Shadow. I just don't know how they could possibly do anything fairly at this point to address past transgressions.

it is time to pack up shop if you expect actual business-oriented hosting support. you get precious little of that from professional ecommerce sites such as yahoo stores. you'll get none of it here.

this is a game. that's not a flippant remark. it's a fact. trying to run a genuine money making business inworld is riskier than buying shares in offshore oil exploration. there's no guarantee that your account will even exist tomorrow and if it doesn't, you are owed nothing.

i'm sorry but the answer to your question is no. there will be no recompense. the contract doesn't specify any.

Dunno about anyone else, but I'm happy that this has become a high enough priority to warrant the work being done on it to be posted in the release notes!

The wheel turns, a new day dawns, and I'm more looking forward to tomorrow having a few less exploits rather than dwell on the what weres of yesterday.

Hmm well maybe 'dwell' was a poor choice of words :)

Don't get me wrong - I'm not all that enthused about folks getting ripped off - it sucks hairy dog nuts - but for the 'here and now' I'll just bathe in the fuzzy glow of a couple of less ways for it to continue.

Siggy.

They can't compensate creators for it. How can they be sure it was leaked through a bug? Someone could just give a copy to someone else, have them spread it, and say "Look! A copy got out because of the bug! L$ please!"

Quantifying things is important but when it's not possible to quantify, I don't think the automatic answer should be "do nothing". When an exact answer is not possible, sometimes a "best guess" can be the next best thing.

Many content creators in SL are seriously thinking of leaving SL because much of their inventory got hosed by a priv bug. It would be nice to quantify the following:

How much inventory actually got redistributed by other users?
How much money WOULD these creators have made if the bug never happened?
What are their total losses?
Is it possible the inventory issues were not entirely due to our bug?

SO, if you cannot answer these questions by using hard math, is the only conclusion "do nothing"? "Let Aimee leave SL"? Sometimes I think it's OK to eyeball and estimate in hopes of getting a better conclusion. Business decisions are made ALL THE TIME when the hard numbers are not available. Sometimes listening to one's gut isn't a disasterous thing to do. I think the Lindens could look at these questions:

How important are our SL content creators?
How much content have we lost in the game by discouraging creators with these bugs?
How much could this content loss effect our business?
Are these these priv bugs making new content creators uncomfortable?
IF we decide our content creators are important, how can we keep them from leaving?
How can we make content creators of the future feel comfortable enough to continue producing in SL?

The Lindens will never make 100% of the people happy, but when they have a buggy priv system and no precise way to estimate losses, then they need to estimate the action to reduce losses.
