Permissions system reminder, or, when can people delete my stuff?

Everybody,

I just wanted to remind folks about how the object permissions system works. It's powerful, but one of those powers is to allow other people to delete your stuff! Ah, ain't it fun playing with fire.

When you make an object, it comes into the world owned by you. If you have a group activated (are showing a title by your name), your active group also gets an interest in the object.

You can then allow other people in that group to:
* Move
* Modify
* Copy

You can see these by clicking on an object and hitting Edit -> More -> General. By default all these options are off. In previous versions of Second Life, they were all on.

IMPORTANT: If you turn on modify, people in the group can change the object and can delete it.

Likewise, there are options for "Other users". There you can also choose move, modify, and copy. Again, these all default to off.

If you turn on "other users modify", other users can change the object or can delete it.

The idea behind this is to give the opportunity to creators to loosen up the controls on their objects. By default, object permissions are locked down, but you can make them as non-restrictive as you like. If you want, you can make members of your group have exactly the same permissions on objects that you have. It's an equalitarian, utopian society!

The gotcha is that if you turn the allow modify flag on, other users can delete your objects! So be careful what you wish for.

Cory and I have seen a few cases of disappearing objects that were because:
* The owner deleted them (huh?)
* The owner had set "other users can modify" and someone else deleted it, or
* The owner had set "group can modify" and a member of the group had deleted it

You might want to take a look back at objects created during the SL 0.7 period, which was about 1-2 months ago. Those objects defaulted to group modify on, and you might not have wanted 'em to.

Who gets the credits ( as in LD's) when it's deleted? If the person deleting it gets the credit, even if it's on your property, then there will be an alterior motive for people to delete objects... not creative ones.

Something to think about.

Add a "delete" checkbox, I think deletion should be separate from the other 3.

That's just me *shrug*

The person who owns the object gets the credit.

YES I agree with Dave....Modify should NOT include delete.

The way I think about it, modify and delete permissions are pretty similar. If someone can modify my object, they can move it far, far away. Ok, so they don't get credit for deleting it, but as far as I'm concerned, the object is just as gone.

Not necessessarrily Aaron, as move is a seperate permission. They *can*, however, script something in to move an object... although this type of griefing would take a long time. I also would like a modify without delete included.

i was wondering if we could the permission boxes in the window we get when we double click an object in our inventory? we already have the buy dialog, but i want to be able to set an object to no mod nocopy so that i can just give them out rather than pulling out the object , changing permissions and setting cost to 0.

Another idea would be to have a more indepth permissions dialog.

Like user can or cannot do individule things:

Move
Size
Texture

etc.... you get the point.

Some people are good at various things and if you seperate each permission each person has more control over what happens to their objects.

Also would be a nice addition to granting permissions to modify users objects....have a menu popup that allows specific activities to be allowed or disallowed.
